What are Conex Boxes?

The name Conex refers to the type of storage container produced by the U.S. Army in the early 1950s. The name refers to Container Express (hence, ConEx), the logistics system that utilized those containers. Today, Conex is a general term for shipping containers. Other names for these steel boxes are intermodal containers or sea cans.

The U.S. Army still produces a container called a Tricon, similar to the Conex boxes of the past. Three Tricon 8ft x 10ft containers can be welded side by side and are equivalent in size to a single 20ft container.

Conex boxes are widely used by a variety of professions to store materials and keep them safe from the natural elements. In this blog, we’ll discuss the uses, types and benefits of containers.

Uses of Conex Boxes

You can use Conex boxes in a variety of situations. Construction sites commonly use containers to store materials, from pipes to electrical wiring. But though that might be the most common place to spot a Conex box, it’s not the only place they’re used. They can also be found in a variety of commercial industries. In addition to storage use, they have been utilized in projects as varied as wastewater-treatment services and concession stands. They can also be modified into temporary workspaces for remote workers or employees waiting for a new office building to be constructed.

What is the Size of a Conex Box?

The most common container sizes are 20ft and 40ft in length.

• 20ft x 8ft x 8ft 6in (Volume of 1,360 ft3)
• 40ft x 8ft x 8ft 6in (Volume of 2,720 ft3)

Types of Conex Boxes

Depending on the container’s intended purpose, there are a few distinct types of Conex boxes. Whether you need to store materials, create an accessible workspace or need specially designed containers, Conex boxes are versatile enough to serve your needs.

Conex Storage Box

Conex storage boxes can range in quality from like-new one-trip containers to worn as-is units. However, all Southwest Mobile Storage Conex boxes are guaranteed to be wind and weathertight and offer secure storage protected from the elements.

Ground-Level Offices

Ground-level offices are portable workspaces that allow workers to remain productive even if their primary office is under construction or otherwise unusable. These Conex boxes are commonly used on construction sites, outside office renovations and elsewhere.

Ground-level offices are available in many sizes and configurations to suit the specific needs of different businesses. They include a range of features to make the workspace more comfortable, including air conditioning, heating, lighting, electrical outlets, shelving and furniture.

High Cube Conex

Standard Conex boxes are 8ft 6in tall, but high-cube containers may be an option for those wanting to store oversized items like furniture, building equipment and other difficult objects. These storage boxes offer an additional foot of height, allowing for the storage of more items than a standard Conex box.

Modified Conex

You can modify containers for a number of uses. For instance, they’ve been used successfully across various industries like hospitals and public services. At Southwest Mobile Storage, we can add helpful components to make your Conex unique.

Benefits of Conex Boxes

Containers can withstand harsh conditions at sea. Its floor can bear heavy loads and distributes weight evenly to the container corners. These corners have four bottom fittings to ensure the container remains secured and stackable. In addition to this, Conex boxes can maintain their structural integrity even when exposed to temperatures ranging from -22 to 149 degrees Fahrenheit.

Most Conex boxes have a four-bar, eight-cam locking system. However, our Conex boxes at Southwest Mobile Storage also feature a customized slide bolt and lock box system, offering higher security. This ensures that illegal access is almost impossible while making it easy for authorized personnel to access the container’s contents.

Containers are highly versatile and suitable for various applications, including shipping, storage and construction. Thanks to their portability, they are easy to move from one location to another. You can move them with a forklift for short distances and deliver them on a truck bed for longer journeys.

Conex boxes provide ample space, making them ideal for storing assorted items. They offer a larger and more secure storage space than other available options. Loading items into a Conex box is safer and more accessible at ground level. This eliminates the need for an elevated truck bed and makes storage more efficient.
