BURBANK, CA (August 02, 2023) - Burbank City Manager Justin Hess announced the selection of Fire Chief Danny Alvarez as the next Fire Chief for the City of Burbank, effective September 1, 2023. Chief Alvarez will replace outgoing Fire Chief Eric Garcia, who is set to retire on August 31, 2023.

Alvarez comes to Burbank from the City of Santa Monica where he has been serving as Fire Chief. This move marks a triumphant return to Burbank's Fire Department, where Chief Alvarez dedicated 25 years of his career. During his previous tenure in Burbank, Chief Alvarez was instrumental in various leadership roles including Deputy Fire Chief since 2018. In that capacity, he oversaw 120 sworn personnel, 16 civilian staff, and directly supervised five battalion chiefs.

His expertise in budget and personnel management, as well as policy development, equipped him to guide a complex department across ranks during his quarter-century in Burbank.

Chief Alvarez's notable positions have included acting fire chief, battalion chief, fire captain, fire engineer and fire prevention inspector. Furthermore, his experience extended to roles such as recruit academy instructor, hazardous materials team member, and, of course, firefighter.

A passionate advocate for regional and statewide fire service and emergency management organizations, Chief Alvarez holds a bachelor's degree in fire and emergency management from Waldorf University. The Burbank Unified School District Board placed its superintendent on administrative leave with no explanation after a closed-session meeting to evaluate his performance, officials announced Thursday.

But school board officials have released few details about why Matt Hill, who took the superintendent job in 2015, was suddenly removed from his post.

In a letter sent to parents and teachers Thursday, school board President Steve Ferguson said Hill was placed on paid administrative leave effective immediately but offered no further details.

“Know that the Board did not take this action lightly,” the letter said. “We also know that many of you will have questions. This action, however, is a confidential personnel matter.”

Ferguson did not respond to questions about the board’s decision, and referred The Times in an email to the letter sent to parents and teachers.

Emily Weisberg, vice president of the board, said school officials expected to address the district’s future leadership in its next meeting. She said the board was not allowed to discuss personnel matters.

The decision was announced after the board of education met in closed session Wednesday night for a special meeting.

According to the meeting agenda, board members met to discuss a “Public Employee Performance Evaluation” of the superintendent.

Initially hired in 2015, Hill’s contract was extended in 2019 and again in July 2022 by the board. Under that contract, Hill was set to remain as superintendent until June 30, 2025.

Under the terms of the contract, the board can fire the superintendent for cause, such as “unsatisfactory performance,” misconduct or breach of contract. The superintendent would then be given an opportunity to dispute the accusations.

The superintendent can also be dismissed without cause, requiring the district to pay his salary for a year.

Hill did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Representatives for the district’s Parent Teacher Assn., as well as the Burbank Teachers Assn., could not be immediately reached for comment.

According to Ferguson’s letter, John Paramo, assistant superintendent of educational services, would take the role of acting superintendent.

The board plans to discuss the school district’s leadership during its next meeting on June 15, according to the letter.

Despite shuttering stores nationwide, Sears looks like it could be making a comeback in suburban Los Angeles.

Signs reading "coming soon" have appeared at the nearly 130,000-square-foot Sears at the Burbank Town Center at 111 E. Magnolia Blvd. in Burbank, California, said Eric Maenner, the mall's general manager. Posts about the signs have appeared on social media after the once iconic American retailer announced it was closing the location in late 2022.

Meanwhile, Sears is attempting to sublease its Burbank Town Center space, according to marketing materials, in what could be an alternative strategy depending on what a potential tenant might be willing to pay. JLL is marketing the entire space for sublease, and as for the chain's plans for the location — reopening a store or taking on a new tenant — "we haven't had feedback from them," said Liam Bredberg, an associate with the brokerage.

Asked about the prospect of the Sears reopening, Maenner said: "Your guess is good as mine. We really haven't gotten any guidance from them. We're in wait-and-see mode."

The potential reopening is another twist in Sears years-long saga of mostly closing stores across the United States after decades of operating as one of America's largest retailers. The company, which once counted stores in the hundreds, now has roughly a dozen locations nationally. In December 2022, Sears spin-off Sears Hometown Stores, based in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Sears is owned by Transformco.

Sears has experimented in reopening stores it previously shuttered. For example, the retailer reopened its location in the L.A. neighborhood of North Hollywood in November 2017, according to the Los Angeles Daily News, and reopened a store in Oak Brook, Illinois, in 2018, according to Business Insider. Both stores later closed.

Shuttered Sears have been targeted for redevelopment projects. In Glendale, California, a Sears may become hundreds of apartments in the city's downtown area, and a Sears in suburban Chicago may become an e-commerce distribution hub.

The closest still operating Sears store to the Burbank location is located at 15600 Whittwood Lane in Whittier, California, roughly 20 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles, according to Sears' website.
