Here's who Culver City recognized as "Senior of the Year."

CULVER CITY, CA — Dr. Janet Cameron Hoult was named "Senior of the Year" during the Culver City Council Meeting this month.

Culver City recognized Dr. Hoult for her efforts to encourage local seniors to stay active and engaged. Hoult has lived in Culver City since the 1970s, sharing 25 of those years with her latehusband Charley. In addition to teaching poetry at the Culver City Senior Center and volunteering for the Culver City Arts Foundation, Hoult has also been active in the city government. She has served on the Culver City Disability Awareness Committee, the Landlord-Tenant Mediation Board, the Culver City Sister City Committee, Friends of the Library Board, and the Culver City Centennial Celebration Committee.

She edited Culver City's Centennial Poetry Collection, published in 2018. She was Culver City's Artist Laureate for Poetry from 2015-2019, and now holds Emerita status.

Hoult's father was a foreign services officer and she traveled the world from a young age and graduated from high school in Iran. She received degrees from USC (Ed.D. in 1980), UCLA (M.A. in 1972), Universite de Grenoble in Grenoble, France (C.E.S. in 1963), and the University of Washington (B.A. in 1958). Hoult was also a Fulbright Fellow and Lecturer in France. She taught for 17 years with the Los Angeles Unified School District and then trained language teachers around the world. She later became a professor at CSULA, where she taught for 14 years and served as Director for the CSULA Center for Effective Teaching and Learning training new faculty members and also served as Acting Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs for two years.

While at CSULA, she received the Distinguished Service Award, Distinguished Woman of the Year Award, and the Outstanding Professor Award.

Hoult has published numerous volumes of poetry. Proceeds from her books go to several charities, including the Boneyard (Culver City's only dog park), Friends of the Griffith Observatory, and a scholarship endowment for biology in memory of her son. She reads her poetry at each regular session of the Culver City Council Meetings.

"I'm honored to represent Culver City as an Older American," Hoult said in a statement. "This has been my home base, my place to find support and peace for over fifty years. I look forward to continuing to write and encourage our Older Americans."

Hoult currently resides at Palm Court, a senior living community in Culver City. She read the following poem she composed at the awards ceremony:

As you grow older

You have to be bolder

When taking care of yourself

Keep using your mind

And you will find

You can better maintain your health

Community is key

And you can take it from me

Culver City is filled with a wealth

Of activities to enlighten

And very much brighten

Each of your days which is great

So without hesitation

Or undo contemplation

A truth I will definitely state

Is my love for this town

Which brings me a smile, not a frown

And always finds ways to stimulate

The Leapfrog Group graded all of the state's hospitals based on more than 30 measures of patient safety. See how your local hospital fared.

CULVER CITY, CA — Several hospitals in California received top marks, but others didn't quite measure up in the Spring 2022 Hospital Safety Grades report released Tuesday by The Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit health care watchdog group.

The latest ratings reflect care during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Leapfrog Group said its and other groups' research showed the pandemic reversed years of progress in patient safety.

The pandemic has had a negative effect on "health care delivery at every level and setting, from staffing shortages to increased infections to the very care patients receive," according to the Patient Experience During the Pandemic: Adult Inpatient Care report, also released Tuesday by The Leapfrog Group.

"The health care workforce has faced unprecedented levels of pressure during the pandemic, and as a result, patients' experience with their care appears to have suffered," Leapfrog Group president and CEO Leah Binder said in a news release. "We commend the workforce for their heroic efforts these past few years and now strongly urge hospital leadership to recommit to improved care — from communication to responsiveness — and get back on track with patient safety outcomes."

In California, 91 hospitals received an "A" grade, 58 hospitals received a "B" grade, 107 hospitals received a "C" grade and 19 hospitals received a "D" grade. Five hospitals received an "F" grade.

In Culver City, Southern California Hospital at Culver City - Culver City received a "D" grade.

Here are the rankings, according to Leapfrog.

The letter grades assigned to nearly 3,000 U.S general hospitals were based on more than 30 measures of patient safety. Leapfrog says its hospital rating system is the only one in the country focusing solely on a hospital's ability to protect patients from preventable errors, accidents, injuries and infections.

Included in the 30 are five that research has shown to directly affect patient outcomes, but can be improved with greater communication between caregivers and patients — the number of central line-associated bloodstream infections, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, infections from colon surgery, MRSA (Staphylococcus) blood laboratory-identified events, and facility-wide inpatient diarrhea events.

When there's communication about medications, for example, that can lead to fewer hospitalizations for conditions such as sepsis and blood clots, fewer complications, and decreases in the incidence of respiratory failure, Leapfrog said.

Among the findings:

To determine each hospital's grade, a panel of medical experts selected 30 evidence-based measures of patient safety such as postoperative sepsis, blood leakage and kidney injury. They then determined the weight of each measure based on evidence, the opportunity for improvement and patient impact.

Data on each measure was collected through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Information from the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, available to all hospitals to complete, also affects grades.

Currently, Leapfrog does not assign grades to military or Veterans Administration hospitals, critical access hospitals, specialty hospitals, children's hospitals or outpatient surgery centers.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade methodology has been peer-reviewed and published in the Journal of Patient Safety.

A big cut in water use is needed to prevent officials from implementing even more stringent measures to mitigate the drought. What to know.

CULVER CITY, CA — Six million residents in Southern California will face water restrictions next month after water officials declared a severe shortage emergency amid the state's worsening drought.

Residents across dozens of Southland cities — including Culver City — will fall under such restrictions as the region continued to experience severely limited water supplies, according to the Metropolitan Water District.

Starting June 1, outdoor watering will be cut to just one day a week in Culver City, according to water officials. As a result, yellow and brown lawns were expected to be the norm this summer.

Although attempting to use less water in households will help, officials have identified outdoor watering as one of the biggest uses of water contributing to worsening drought conditions.

Residents were urged to make changes to save water, such as removing lawns and replacing them with native plants that require less irrigation.

"We cannot afford green lawns," MWD General Manager Adel Hagekhalil said.

MWD member water agencies that fail to enforce the new rules will face fines of up to $2,000 per acre-foot of water supplied by the MWD that exceeds monthly allocation limits.

Member agencies will also be responsible for determining which days watering will be allowed for their customers. Individual agencies can also opt to meet a reduced limit on the overall amount of water they use instead of enforcing the one-day watering rule. If the agencies exceed the limit, they will face the same fines.

It's an unprecedented move for the Southland's largest water supplier, and it signals a shift to more aggressive conservation measures across Southern California.

The average potable water use across the MWD's service area amounts to 125 gallons per day. In comparison, customers of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power use about 111 gallons per person per day, Ellen Cheng, a spokesperson for the department, told the Los Angeles Times.

Water customers will need to slash water use by 30 percent to make a difference and to combat drought conditions "unlike anything we've experienced before," the MWD said.

The following cities, neighborhoods and locations will be affected by the new water restrictions, according to the MWD.

"We have to make these finite supplies last the entire year," Hagekhalil said in a statement Tuesday. "If we don't cut back now, we could be limited to providing only enough water to meet health and human safety needs in these communities."

The new rules will affect residents in areas that rely on the State Water Project. Because of the drought, the state has cut water project deliveries to just 5 percent of requested allocations. The State Water Project typically provides 30 percent of the water used in Southern California.

The watering restrictions will take effect June 1. MWD officials warned that if the rules don't result in sufficient water savings, additional restrictions are possible, including a complete ban on "all nonessential outdoor irrigation."

More restrictions could be imposed as early as Sept. 1.

All of the Southland and 92 percent of the state was under severe drought, according to the National Integrated Drought System. Such conditions have the potential to lengthen and intensify fire season as fuels continue to dry out. Severe drought can also stress trees, trigger plants to increase reproductive mechanisms and increase diseases among wildlife.

"This is a crisis unlike anything that we've seen before," MWD Executive Officer Deven Upadhyay said. "We really only have a little more than half of the water that we need to be able to make it through the summertime and into the end of the year under normal demands, and that's why normal will not work."

The watering restrictions will also affect at least some customers served by the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District, Inland Empire Utilities Agency, Calleguas Municipal Water District and Three Valleys Municipal Water District.

Gov. Gavin Newsom last month directed the MWD and other water suppliers statewide to ramp up conservation efforts by advancing water-shortage contingency plans.

The MWD offers a rebate of $2 per square foot for people who replace their grass lawns with water-efficient landscaping. Rebates were also available from other local water agencies.

The rebate program helped remove 200 million square feet of grass, which saved enough water to provide about 62,000 homes with water each year, officials said.

During the state's annual April 1 Sierra Nevada snowpack survey, officials found that levels were just 38 percent of average. As of Friday, the state had received 15.63 inches of rain, 75 percent of the historical average, according to California Water Watch.

Coupled with Newsom's January emergency drought declaration, that means another summer of water restrictions.

Despite the healthy amount of snow and rain that fell on Northern California last month, the state remained in a drought.

State emergency regulations directed residents to do the following.

CULVER CITY, CA — What do Culver City moms want from their kids this Mother's Day?

What many will likely get come May 8 are jewelry and Mother's Day brunch or dinner out. Those two categories are driving a record $31.7 billion in Mother's Day spending, a $3.6 billion increase over last year's record, according to a report last week from the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insight & Analytics.

Mother's Day Brunch & Dinner 2022: Greater L.A. Restaurant Specials

Some 84 percent of U.S. adults said they plan to celebrate Mother's Day with a gift, spending $245 on average on their mothers and mother figures, the report said. Jewelry stores alone are expected to see $7 billion in spending, according to the report.

That's good news for jewelry and keepsake shops around Culver City.

If you're planning to treat Mom to dinner out, reservations are going quickly at restaurants in Culver City, including those OpenTable recently listed among the 100 Best Brunch Spots in America. Reservations are up 39 percent from pre-pandemic 2019, and up 13 percent from 2021, the online reservation service said last week.

And, according to the OpenTable survey, almost half (48 percent) of moms want to celebrate Mother's Day at a restaurant. The survey of 1,255 adults also showed that 45 percent plan to make up for lost time with their mother figures during the pandemic by "going big" this year.

'Anything To Feel Pampered'

A 2021 YouGov poll revealed the top five gifts moms want are flowers, a card with a heartfelt message, a gift certificate to the spa or for a massage, jewelry and chocolate. Most moms are satisfied with however their children honor them on Mother's Day, though, with 58 percent saying they've never been disappointed by their kids' shows of affection and appreciation.

Some reliable go-to places for gifts in Culver City include:

We took our own informal survey of several Patch moms. While by no means scientific, it revealed some similar themes.

"We have always had the girls make homemade cards — even now that they are teenagers," one mom told us, adding the handwritten notes are "so much more meaningful than any Hallmark card could ever be."

Some new moms and those with small children don't want stuff as much as they do a break.

"New moms can't expect to get anything from the kids," one Patch mom told us. "I'd say a restaurant gift certificate for them. That's one less meal to cook."

Another said: "My toddler keeps me running around all the time and doesn't sleep, so any time I can have to take care of myself, anything to feel pampered even just for an hour — mani/pedi, hair blown out, restaurant gift card so I don't have to cook, or just an offer to watch him for one hour."

It never hurts to drop a hint.

"I want a plant — not flowers, because they don't last as long — but a plant that my husband knows I have a spot for and the right light for," one mom told us. Another said, "you can never go wrong with a bottle of wine."

And another Patch mom treats herself to a hike on Mother's Day. "The kids usually join in," she said, "even if they don't want to."

Said another: "Alone time! Night at a hotel. Dinner date or night out with friends. Meals pre-ordered and handled."

Get Mom In The Photo

Precious ones, we have news for you: Each of you is going to give your mom 45 pieces of homemade artwork between now and when you leave the nest, according to a survey last year conducted by OnePoll for the art website Canvaspop. And while your moms may say they'll treasure your creative expressions as if Picasso himself were responsible — and, in fact, three-fourths of them display some of it on their walls — another fact is 41 percent agree you're "no Picasso."

So, change that up, kiddos.

More than two-thirds of moms last year said they want more family photos for their walls, but with a catch: Give mom a break from behind the shutter and take photos that include her. The average mom surveyed said she's featured in less than half of family photos.

This survey was in 2021, but unless you wore out the shutter on your camera taking photos, the advice holds.

Make Memories With Mom

With inflation at a 40-year high, money is tight for many Culver City families. Experiences count a lot with moms, and they don't have to break the budget.

"I don't need stuff," a Patch mom with an adult child told us. She just wants to spend quality time with her daughter.

"A mom's view of Mother's Day changes as kids get older," another Patch mom said. "When they were little, homemade cards and a Mother's Day spa getaway from them was pure bliss. Now the perfect Mother's Day for me involves dressing up, going out to dinner, and listening to all of their laughter and stories."

But, she said, "I still love the homemade cards and have saved them all through the years!"

Here's another idea: Pick up a nice, cloth-covered journal and write down some of your favorite memories of Mom. Be sure to include some of the bits of advice she's dished out over the years. And don't forget to tell her she was right.

Or how about a scavenger hunt for some of Mom's favorite things? That idea comes from Woman's Day. Or how about a custom jigsaw puzzle of a cherished family photo featuring Mom front and center? (This assumes you've followed the advice above and gotten Mom out from behind the shutter.)

What is your idea of a perfect Mother's Day gift? Tell us in the comments.
