Tis the season for Christmas trees, and Patch has you covered with everything you need to find the perfect tree in Redondo Beach.

REDONDO BEACH, CA — People in Redondo Beach who prefer fresh-cut Christmas trees — whether they cut down trees themselves or buy from a retail lot — shouldn’t have any trouble finding them in 2022, according to a survey of Christmas tree growers by an industry trade group.

The prediction by the Real Christmas Tree Board comes after a survey of 55 wholesalers that supply two-thirds of the market for fresh trees and 1,500 U.S. adults ages 21-49.

“The real Christmas tree industry met demand last year, and it will meet demand this year,” Marsha Gray, executive director of the Real Christmas Tree Board, said in a news release. “This is essentially a year without surprises.”

Residents of Redondo Beach have plenty of options, sortable by ZIP code and by type, on the Real Christmas Tree Board website. They include:

Seasonal lot:

Mr. Jingles Christmas Trees 2

17520 Prairie Ave, Torrance, CA 90504

Garden Center:

Armstrong Garden Centers 29

25225 Crenshaw Blvd. Torrance, CA 90505

Home improvement store:

There is one nearby Home Depot store at:

There is also one nearby Lowes store at:

Real Trees May Be Pricier

Trees, like everything else, may cost a little more this year. Tree growers answering the Real Christmas Tree Board’s survey said growing costs have increased. About 36 percent of respondents said costs were up 11 percent to 15 percent compared to last year, while 27 percent said costs increased 16 to 20 percent. Another 10 percent said the year-over-year increase in production costs was more than 21 percent.

As a result, 71 percent of growers said they would likely increase wholesale prices. That means trees could cost anywhere from 5 percent to 20 percent or more.

Consumers seem to be taking the expected price hikes in stride.

“While our grower survey tells us wholesale prices are likely to be higher for real Christmas trees this year, our consumer survey tells us people expected as much,” Gray said in the news release. “The good news is fans of real Christmas trees say they believe the trees are worth the price, and they are willing to pay more this year if necessary to get one — and that’s not a surprise either.”

Growers’ expectations of a healthy season are also tempered by fears of supply chain disruptions, the No. 1 concern of 44 percent of growers. About 35 percent said their top concern is that inflation-strapped consumers will cut real Christmas trees from their lists this year. About 21 percent of respondents cited labor availability concerns.

The Origin Of Christmas Trees

The origin of the Christmas tree can be traced to long before the advent of Christianity, according to History.com.

In ancient times, it was commonly believed the sun was a god. It appeared to be sick as daylight waned in the winter, but evergreens thriving during winter were a reminder that the sun would become strong again and lush greenery and warmth would return.

Evergreen trees were seen as a symbol of eternal life among ancient Egyptians, Hebrews and Chinese. Pagans throughout Europe used evergreens in their homes to represent fertility and new life.

Christmas trees were first used by devout Christians in Germany. The 16th century Protestant reformer Martin Luther is believed to have added lighted candles to trees. He was composing a sermon as he walked home on a winter evening and was struck by the sight of stars twinkling above the evergreens, and recreated the scene in a tree in his family’s main room.

REDONDO BEACH, CA — Although usually not prolific, the Taurid meteor shower that lumbers along through most of the fall could produce a rare “fireball swarm” if typical patterns hold true when the shooting star peaks over Redondo Beach next weekend.

While you’re marking down important skywatching dates, don’t forget the total lunar eclipse occurring next week. The blood moon falls on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8, this year.

Right now, weather conditions are cloudy for the Friday and Saturday peak of the Taurids. As with most meteor showers, the hours between midnight and dawn offer the best chances to see fireballs.

The Taurid meteor shower is composed of two streams, both of which are active right now. The Northern Taurids are expected to peak Nov. 12-13. But in reality, meteor experts say any night it’s clear over the next couple of weeks should be good for meteor watching.

If the Taurids are known for anything, it’s producing a higher percentage of fireballs among the five or 10 slow-moving meteors per hour, so even with an 87 percent full moon, they should still be visible.

And if there’s an outbreak of fireballs — something that happens every seven years — the bright moon shouldn’t be a problem. Fireball swarms were reported in both 2015 and 2008, according to the American Meteor Society, so this could be a good year.

As the Taurid meteor shower parent Comet Encke orbits the sun, it leaves behind a trail of debris in its wake. The Taurids are produced when the debris hits Earth’s atmosphere at about 65,000 mph and burns up. But every seven years, brighter meteors called fireballs are created when Jupiter orbits close to the comet stream its gravity pushes pebble-sized fragments toward Earth, creating more fireballs when the debris hits our atmosphere.

During the last Taurid meteor swarm in 2015, some observers reported seeing double the number of meteors and a much higher percentage than usual of fireballs, according to International Meteor Organization.

To see the most meteors, be patient. Your best chances to see fireballs occur in the hours between midnight and dawn. The radiant point, Taurus the Bull, will be well above the horizon. It’s not far from the Pleiades star cluster, also known as the Seven Sisters.

You don’t need to identify the constellation to see the meteors, as they’ll appear all over the sky. But you should try to get away from city lights and be prepared to settle in and watch for a few hours. Be sure to dress for the weather.

Last Full Blood Moon Until 2025

November offers plenty of skywatching events. The highlight is the full moon eclipse on Tuesday, Nov. 8. You don’t want to miss the full blood moon — it’s the last total lunar eclipse until March 14, 2025, according to NASA, though we will continue to see partial and penumbral lunar eclipses during that time.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, Earth and moon align. A total eclipse occurs when the moon passes into Earth’s darkest part of Earth’s shadow, called the umbra, which turns the moon a reddish hue. Lunar eclipses are called “blood moons” because of this phenomenon.

The times you need to keep in mind:

More Reasons To Look Up

It’s a good time to see bright planets, too, according to EarthSky.

Saturn is visible high in the sky after sunset. Jupiter shines brighter than most of the stars, and can be found high in the eastern sky after sunset. Mars rises in the eastern sky a few hours after sunset — it is very red right now and brighter than most stars as it moves toward its Dec. 8 opposition, when Earth will fly between Mars and the sun. Mars shines in the western sky on November mornings

You may also start seeing shooting stars from the Leonids meteor shower, a show that runs Nov. 6-30 and peaks around the 17th and 18th. It put on an average show of about 15 meteors an hour, except during cyclonic peaks every 33 years. That happened last in 2001, putting us years a way from an outburst.

What makes the Leonids spectacular any year is their swift movement across the sky — about 44 miles per second — and that increases the chances of fireballs.

The fall meteor showers reach a crescendo Dec. 13-14 when the spectacular Geminids peak. Experts say it is hands-down the best meteor shower in the heavens, producing 120 multicolored meteors at the peak. The shower runs Dec. 7-17.

The Ursids meteor shower, which runs Dec. 17-25 and peaks Dec. 21-22, is the final shooting star show of the year. At the peak, this minor meteor shower produces five or 10 meteors an hour.

As Tropical Storm Kay moves into the region, SoCal goes from heatwaves and wildfires to mudslide risks, heavy winds and high surf.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Tropical Storm Kay slowly made her way up the California coast, helping to douse some natural disasters while simultaneously threatening to ignite others.

Noteworthy rainfall isn't expected to hit Los Angeles until nightfall with the heaviest rain coming after midnight and into the morning Saturday. The storm is expected to batter the region's mountains with heavy downpours and intense wind gusts of more than 60 miles per hour and as high as 110 miles per hour.

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch that will be in effect from 11 p.m. Friday through Saturday evening in the Los Angeles County Mountains and Antelope Valley.

"Moisture from Kay will move into the area today (Friday) and linger through Saturday," according to the NWS. "Showers and thunderstorms with periods of heavy rain at times will increase the risk of flooding, especially in the mountains. The heaviest rain is expected to occur late tonight through Saturday evening."

Forecasters said the rain could lead to excessive runoff resulting in "flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations."

The storm has the potential to trigger mudslides in the county's burn scar areas. In Los Angeles County, officials will be watching the Route and Gulch Fire burn scars in addition to the older burn scars such as the Creek Fire for potential mudslides.

The rain already helped firefighters get the upper hand on the Radford Fire in the Big Bear area, but the combination of wind and lightning remain a potential fire hazard in the drought-stricken Southern California region.

The National Weather Service also warns of the potential for thunder and lightning, which could ignite new wildfires. Along the Los Angeles County coast, Kay will bring heavy surf with waves up to 7 or 8 feet and the potential for flooding in low-lying coastal areas, according to the National Weather Service.

Southern California entered the 10th and possibly final day of a prolonged heat wave Friday, with Tropical Storm Kay bringing clouds and rain to San Diego in the morning and Orange County by the afternoon. Those areas were expected to see the heaviest rainfall in Southern California.

Kay had been categorized as a hurricane, but it weakened as it made landfall Thursday night, then began shifting to the northwest over the ocean. But Kay was still packing a punch, promising to bring widespread rain across the region.

The cloud cover from the storm was helping to trap warm air in the region, meaning continued hot weather on Friday, despite some overcast conditions, along with increased humidity. Excessive heat warnings will remain in effect for most of the Southland until 8 p.m. Friday. Then the rain will move in.

"Rainfall amounts should generally range between a quarter to half inch for the coast, a third to two-thirds of an inch for the valleys, and a half to one-and-one-half for the mountains," according to the NWS. "For the Antelope Valley, generally a third to two-thirds of an inch is expected for the storm. Locally higher amounts could develop, especially with any thunderstorms. Heavy downpours are possible across the mountains and desert where terrain will cause orographic effects that could increase rainfall rates."

The storm has already caused higher tides, prompting concerns of localized flooding along the coast. In Long Beach, crews worked overnight to fortify berms, and sandbags were being made available to residents to help protect their properties from flooding.

Long Beach fire and parks officials were focusing efforts in Alamitos Beach, building up protective berms mainly between Fifth and Ninth places.

"High tide for Long Beach will be at 9:16 p.m. tonight," the Long Beach Fire Department noted on its Twitter page. "Please take efforts now to prepare your homes if you live in vulnerable locations along our coastline that are prone to flooding."

The NWS warned that Kay will bring steep seas and gusty east winds to coastal waters through Saturday.

Gale force winds are expected at Catalina and San Nicolas Islands, with a chance of winds reaching 20 to 30 knots north to Point Conception and the Channel Islands.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn said sandbags were being made available to Catalina residents on the east side of South Beach. She noted that the story "is forecasted to bring wind, high surf and coastal flooding to the island."

According to Hahn, Catalina Express canceled the 5:45 p.m. departure from San Pedro to Avalon, as well as the 7:40 p.m. boat from Avalon to San Pedro and the 9:45 p.m. departure from Avalon to Long Beach.

In the meantime, high heat will persist Friday, bringing with it concerns about strain on the statewide power grid. The California Independent System Operator, which manages the grid, issued another Flex Alert for 4 to 9 p.m. Friday, urging residents to cut back their power use to avoid strain on the system and possible rolling blackouts.

The alerts have been in place nightly throughout the heat wave, and thus far they have worked -- with Cal-ISO avoiding any calls for rolling power outages.

During the Flex Alert, residents are asked to save power by:

Residents were also advised to pre-cool their homes as much as possible and close blinds and drapes to keep interiors cool.

The power grid has been pushed to the limit during the heat wave. Late Tuesday afternoon, statewide electricity demand reached 52,061 megawatts, breaking the record of 50,270 MW set in 2006, according to Cal-ISO.

Southern California has seen temperatures soar above 100 degrees every day since Wednesday of last week. Los Angeles International Airport reached 97 degrees on Thursday, breaking the record for the date of 93 degrees, set in 1984.

It was 103 in Anaheim on Thursday, breaking a record of 102 set in 2015. It was 95 in Newport Beach, breaking a record of 90 set in 1984.

Excessive heat warnings will be in effect through 8 p.m. Friday for the inland coastal area including downtown Los Angeles, the Santa Monica Mountains, L.A. County beaches, the Malibu coast and the San Gabriel, San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys. The warnings expired at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Los Angeles County mountains and Antelope Valley.

The excessive heat warning will also be in place until 8 p.m. Friday for Orange County coastal and inland areas, including valleys in San Bernardino and Riverside, and the Santa Ana mountains and foothills.

"Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors," the NWS urged. "Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances."

Forecasters also urged residents to be aware of the signs of heat stroke and to take precautions.

A wide swath of California's beaches received high marks for water quality. See how Redondo Beach fared.

REDONDO BEACH, CA — Beaches around the state had excellent water quality last summer, according to an environmental group's annual honor roll of coastline quality grades. Several Los Angeles County beaches made the honor roll but others did not fare as well.

Redondo State Beach at Topaz Street received a mixture of a good and bad scoring. The beach received two A grades in dry weather during the summer and winter seasons but in wet seasons, the beach received an F.

Los Angeles County was given excellent "summer dry grades" with 90 percent of county beaches receiving an A or B grade. But wet weather grades weren't as impressive with only 46 percent of beaches receiving a high grade, which is above average for the county.

Within the county, beaches making the grade were Venice City Beach at Brooks Avenue, Rancho Palos Verdes Long Point, Royal Palms State Beach, Palos Verdes Estates at Malaga Cove Trail outlet, Las Tunas County Beach at Pena Creek and Nicholas Beach at San Nicholas Canyon Creek.

The county had three beaches on the "bummer" list of the 10 most polluted beaches. Two of those beaches were stretches of Mother's Beach in Marina del Rey, while the third was the Santa Monica Pier, which returned to the list after being absent last year. Mother's Beach in the Marina is an almost annual fixture on the Beach Bummer List, thanks to its enclosed location with little water movement.

A total of 51 beaches around the state landed on Heal the Bay's honor roll, indicating top-rate water quality grades recorded year-round. Orange County led the way with 19 beaches making the cut, up from 10 last year. Los Angeles County had six beaches on the list, down from seven last year.

On the report’s “beach bummer” list, the ten poorest grades given during the summer months. In the Golden State, Marlin Park in San Mateo County; Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles County; Marina del Rey in Los Angeles County; Moonstone County Park in Humboldt County and Mother’s Beach in Los Angeles County all garnered poor marks.

Polluted ocean water can pose major health risks to swimmers and surfers, according to Heal the Bay. Those who enter waters that received a C grade or lower in the report are at risk of illnesses including stomach flu, ear infections, upper respiratory infections and rashes.

Some 94 percent of California beaches tested for water quality received A or B grades during the summer of 2021, which the environmental group called roughly on par with the five-year average, according to Heal the Bay. But only 66% of California beaches had good or excellent grades during wet weather, which is slightly above the annual average, but "still very concerning," according to Heal the Bay.

"It is wonderful news that most beaches in California have good water quality for swimming," Tracy Quinn, president/CEO of Heal the Bay said in a statement.

"But there are areas with poor water quality that need improvement and infrastructure upgrades. We can't forget that our marine ecosystems are still threatened by the climate crisis and other pollution sources, and we need solutions to address these pressing issues as well. We expect people to increasingly seek out ocean shorelines and freshwater swimming holes to cool off as temperatures rise, so safe, clean and healthy water is needed now more than ever."
