REDONDO BEACH, CA — Residents in Redondo Beach saw their utility bills drastically increase at the beginning of the year, but luckily those prices will be significantly lower in March according to Southern California Gas Co.
For the second month in a row, the market prices of natural gas have dropped and March rates are 83 percent lower than the rates that caused Redondo Beach residents to look at their January bills in shock.
“We’re pleased that we’re seeing what appears to be a trend to natural gas prices that are more in line with last year,” said SoCalGas Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer Gillian Wright. “Still, with the unusually cold and wet weather, we encourage customers to continue to conserve energy and take advantage of our cost-savings programs, which include recently improved direct financial relief for eligible customers.”
An unprecedented cold snap in the region caused market prices to more than double, which resulted in residents owing so much more than they usually pay. Thankfully, SoCalGas estimated that average residential bills will drop from $300 to about $100 this month.
The shocking increase was due to a variety of factors, according to SoCalGas, including:
On Feb. 27, SoCalGas announced they would be putting $10 million toward additional relief for low-income families, seniors and small restaurant owners who were hit hard by the drastic price increases.
Specifically, the company put $5 million toward the Gas Assistance Fund, which provides one-time grants to help pay their gas bills. The contribution was the largest given to the fund since its creation 40 years ago.
An additional $4 million went to relaunching the company’s “Fueling Our Communities” program, which is a collaboration with food banks and nonprofits to provide free meals and groceries to Californians facing food insecurity. Another $1 million will go to the Restaurants Care Resilience Fund to help small businesses with improvements, upgrades, employee retention and to manage debt and rising costs.
"This winter's unprecedented natural gas prices, on top of already high inflation, have been a real hardship for many Southern Californians, especially our most vulnerable, our seniors, and people facing difficult circumstances," said SoCalGas CEO, Scott Drury.

REDONDO BEACH, CA — Weather experts are predicting another wet weekend ahead as rain from another atmospheric river hitting Northern California is expected to sprinkle over Redondo Beach after Thursday night.
In comparison to more recent storms in the city, this rainstorm is predicted to be much weaker and also warmer as temperatures start to climb up about four to eight degrees according to the National Weather Service.
In Redondo Beach, there is a 94 percent chance of rain on Friday with a high of 58 degrees, but dryer and warmer conditions in the low-60s are expected to follow on Saturday and Sunday.
"This will be a much warmer system with snow levels rising to at least 8000 ft which would greatly increase the risk of flooding as snow melt would combine with the heavy rain," NWS said.
For months now, Los Angeles County has been pelted with heavy precipitation and, more recently, snow in some areas. According to the National Weather Service, this winter has been the county's 11th wettest since records began in 1877.
Over the last three months, Downtown L.A. has gotten 17.71 inches of rain. The county's wettest winter was recorded in 2004-2005 with L.A. seeing more than 29 inches of rain, NWS said.
Additionally, the past three months in Los Angeles have had the coolest winter temperatures since the winter of 1978-79 with an average daytime temperature of about 65 degrees.
With all the rainfall, the county's drought conditions have significantly improved. Before the rain began in December, Much of the county was classified to be in a severe drought, with some eastern areas of the county experiencing dryer conditions.
After the dramatic rainstorms, including the atmospheric river that hit the county at the very start of 2023, the whole county has seen drought conditions drastically improve with areas in the Santa Monica Mountains classified as having little to no drought.
"The stormy pattern this winter hasn't only put a dent in the drought, it will eliminate it by the time spring evolves into summer," AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno said.

Max has been a lifelong volunteer helping the homeless community.
He brought the idea of Sacks and Socks to the South Bay after volunteering at a similar event in Venice. The idea is to bring sack lunches (both a meat option and a vegetarian option) as well as a new pair of socks. It’s been with our homeless community, particularly at local churches where they gather and along the beach.
Max is currently working on creating a 502(c)3 so that he can get larger corporate donors to help him fund it and spread it out to other areas. Max is truly dedicated to helping those struggling and hopes to expand beyond CA as he goes off to college.
What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?
He is smart, witty, driven, and kind. He’s been doing volunteer work since he was young, he truly loves giving back to the community, and through humor and grace, he’s teaching his friends the joy of giving back too. He’s inspiring many.

REDONDO BEACH, CA - All of Los Angeles was doused with rain over the weekend, wreaking havoc on roadways and utility systems. The region is still buckling down for more rains through Wednesday.
The greater Los Angeles area saw nearly nonstop rain Friday and Saturday, with downfall lightening some on Sunday. Over the last three days, Redondo Beach got almost three inches of rain. The city specifically saw 2.74 inches of precipitation and nearby in Manhattan Beach, 3.01 inches fell according to Los Angeles Public Works.
Most of LA County’s coastline saw between around two and four inches of rain over the last three days. The San Fernando Valley saw between around five and six inches of rain, while the Downtown area saw between four and five inches. Eagle Rock and Flintridge saw over seven inches of rain, and areas in the San Gabriel Mountains saw as much as 14 inches of rain.
Mountain High received 93 inches of snow, and 40 inches dropped on Mount Wilson.
The weekend’s storm took a significant toll on Los Angeles roadways and power systems. The LADWP said 49,000 of its 1.5 million electric customers were without power Sunday. Thousands remained without power Monday, including major outages in Hollywood, Bel Air, Atwater Village, Marina Del Rey and North Hills.
Southern California Edison on Monday reported outages affecting nearly 600 Los Angeles County customers.
The National Weather Service predicted a lighter storm through Wednesday, promising up to two inches of rain in the mountains and foothills, with one inch in the coasts and valleys. Snow was expected at as low as 3,000 feet of elevation, with up to 18 inches expected in the San Gabriels.
Moderate snowfall of between 5 and 10 inches is expected during the winter weather advisory. Heavy snow is possible Tuesday night and Wednesday, with 6 to 12 inches of snow expected for elevations above 5,000 feet, and as much as 15 inches in the San Gabriel Mountains. Wind gusts could reach 60 mph.
Dangerous driving conditions could result from the snowy and winter conditions. Ice is being reported on Highway 14 through Palmdale and snow has been reported in the Agua Dulce area. The Placerita Canyon off-ramp from Highway 14 is experiencing flooding.
Los Angeles County beaches were expected to have high levels of bacteria through Sunday after the week of storming, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. Storm runoff was expected to create hazardous conditions 72 hours after rains.

Drawing on a diversity of musical styles for his compositions and performances, he gracefully combines classical, jazz, Celtic and Brazilian ideas into his sound, and earned a myriad of accolades and awards.
- La Guitarra Canta: Sunday, April 2, 2023 at 8 p.m., the Los Angeles International Flamenco Festival features world-renowned flamenco director, dancer and choreographer Antonio Canales. Achieving worldwide fame, Canales has starred as a guest artist with some of the world's top dance companies. His show 'Torero' was nominated for an Emmy award in 1995 and was awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts in 2020. Canales shares the stage with vocalists David el Galli and Manuel de la Tomasa, guitarist David de Arahal, and Cheyén on percussion.
Opening the performances on both nights is flamenco harpist Ana Crismán. The only known musician who plays and composes flamenco on harp, Crismán and her Arpa Jonda have played iconic venues such as the Teatro Villamarta, the Alhambra of Granada in the Festival de Música y Danza de Granada (Fex) and in international festivals such as the Sfinks Mixed Festival 2018 (Belgium), and the Festival Musicale del Mediterraneo (Italy).
In addition to the performances, the L.A. International Flamenco Festival will feature an art exhibition with works by Parsi painter and dancer Afroz André in the art gallery at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center prior to the show, starting at 6pm and during the post-show VIP Meet-and-Greet Reception. André studied figurative drawing and painting at The New York Academy of Art and The Art Students League in New York City and was a resident artist at the Cristina Hoyos Museum in Spain where she currently has permanent exhibitions. Her award-winning work has been featured in the media in the United States, Italy, Spain, Slovenia, China, and Turkey.
