We prorate your rent by the day after the first 28-day billing cycle, so you don't have to pay for a full month when you only have your mobile containers and offices for a few days.

While other companies may be able to do small container modifications, most don't have an in-house fabrication staff or 90,000 sq ft fabrication facility like we do. As a result, they outsource the work on your custom container, so you don't know who's actually building it.

Rest assured knowing your modified shipping container will be built to the highest quality standards. Our certified weld and quality control inspectors check every step of the fabrication process to ensure everything is structurally sound and built to your specifications.

REDONDO BEACH, CA — What do Redondo Beach moms want from their kids this Mother's Day?

What many will likely get come May 8 are jewelry and Mother's Day brunch or dinner out. Those two categories are driving a record $31.7 billion in Mother's Day spending, a $3.6 billion increase over last year's record, according to a report last week from the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insight & Analytics.

Mother's Day Brunch & Dinner 2022: Greater L.A. Restaurant Specials

Some 84 percent of U.S. adults said they plan to celebrate Mother's Day with a gift, spending $245 on average on their mothers and mother figures, the report said. Jewelry stores alone are expected to see $7 billion in spending, according to the report.

That's good news for jewelry and keepsake shops around Redondo Beach.

If you're planning to treat Mom to dinner out, reservations are going quickly at restaurants in Redondo Beach, including those OpenTable recently listed among the 100 Best Brunch Spots in America. Reservations are up 39 percent from pre-pandemic 2019, and up 13 percent from 2021, the online reservation service said last week.

And, according to the OpenTable survey, almost half (48 percent) of moms want to celebrate Mother's Day at a restaurant. The survey of 1,255 adults also showed that 45 percent plan to make up for lost time with their mother figures during the pandemic by "going big" this year.

'Anything To Feel Pampered'

A 2021 YouGov poll revealed the top five gifts moms want are flowers, a card with a heartfelt message, a gift certificate to the spa or for a massage, jewelry and chocolate. Most moms are satisfied with however their children honor them on Mother's Day, though, with 58 percent saying they've never been disappointed by their kids' shows of affection and appreciation.

Some reliable go-to places for gifts in Redondo Beach include:

We took our own informal survey of several Patch moms. While by no means scientific, it revealed some similar themes.

"We have always had the girls make homemade cards — even now that they are teenagers," one mom told us, adding the handwritten notes are "so much more meaningful than any Hallmark card could ever be."

Some new moms and those with small children don't want stuff as much as they do a break.

"New moms can't expect to get anything from the kids," one Patch mom told us. "I'd say a restaurant gift certificate for them. That's one less meal to cook."

Another said: "My toddler keeps me running around all the time and doesn't sleep, so any time I can have to take care of myself, anything to feel pampered even just for an hour — mani/pedi, hair blown out, restaurant gift card so I don't have to cook, or just an offer to watch him for one hour."

It never hurts to drop a hint.

"I want a plant — not flowers, because they don't last as long — but a plant that my husband knows I have a spot for and the right light for," one mom told us. Another said, "you can never go wrong with a bottle of wine."

And another Patch mom treats herself to a hike on Mother's Day. "The kids usually join in," she said, "even if they don't want to."

Said another: "Alone time! Night at a hotel. Dinner date or night out with friends. Meals pre-ordered and handled."

Get Mom In The Photo

Precious ones, we have news for you: Each of you is going to give your mom 45 pieces of homemade artwork between now and when you leave the nest, according to a survey last year conducted by OnePoll for the art website Canvaspop. And while your moms may say they'll treasure your creative expressions as if Picasso himself were responsible — and, in fact, three-fourths of them display some of it on their walls — another fact is 41 percent agree you're "no Picasso."

So, change that up, kiddos.

More than two-thirds of moms last year said they want more family photos for their walls, but with a catch: Give mom a break from behind the shutter and take photos that include her. The average mom surveyed said she's featured in less than half of family photos.

This survey was in 2021, but unless you wore out the shutter on your camera taking photos, the advice holds.

Make Memories With Mom

With inflation at a 40-year high, money is tight for many Redondo Beach families. Experiences count a lot with moms, and they don't have to break the budget.

"I don't need stuff," a Patch mom with an adult child told us. She just wants to spend quality time with her daughter.

"A mom's view of Mother's Day changes as kids get older," another Patch mom said. "When they were little, homemade cards and a Mother's Day spa getaway from them was pure bliss. Now the perfect Mother's Day for me involves dressing up, going out to dinner, and listening to all of their laughter and stories."

But, she said, "I still love the homemade cards and have saved them all through the years!"

Here's another idea: Pick up a nice, cloth-covered journal and write down some of your favorite memories of Mom. Be sure to include some of the bits of advice she's dished out over the years. And don't forget to tell her she was right.

Or how about a scavenger hunt for some of Mom's favorite things? That idea comes from Woman's Day. Or how about a custom jigsaw puzzle of a cherished family photo featuring Mom front and center? (This assumes you've followed the advice above and gotten Mom out from behind the shutter.)

What is your idea of a perfect Mother's Day gift? Tell us in the comments.

Swaths of Angelenos could be eligible for money back on COVID-19 tests after the company was accused of distributing fraudulent results.

REDONDO BEACH, CA — Californians who paid for coronavirus tests through Sameday Health could be eligible for refunds after a settlement accused the company of giving fake results to customers.

The Los Angeles-based company will have to pay more than $20 million under the conditions of the settlement, which was announced by Los Angeles City Atty. Mike Feuer this week.

Under the settlement, swaths of Californians who paid out of pocket for a PCR test between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31 2020 are expected to be refunded by the company.

Some customers who got a PCR test from Sameday outside that timeframe are eligible and customers who didn't get results within the advertised turnaround time are also eligible for a repayment.

Sameday Technologies, which operates under Sameday Health, has a total of 55 testing sites throughout the country, with 16 locations in Los Angeles County, including five in the city.

In Los Angeles County, there are 16 locations, with storefronts in Long Beach, Redondo Beach, Pasadena, Sherman Oaks, Manhattan Beach, Studio City, West Hollywood, downtown Los Angeles, Los Feliz, Hollywood, Culver City, Brentwood, Westchester, Santa Monica and Venice. The company also does house calls in the county.

In Redondo Beach, a clinic was still open at 401 South Pacific Coast Highway.

Feuer and Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón filed the complaint, alleging that Sameday Health and its CEO Felix Huettenback falsely advertised that test results would be provided to customers within 24 hours, knowing that it couldn't make that guarantee. The city also alleged that they falsified and forged COVID-19 test results to at least 500 customers when it couldn't provide real results within 24 hours.

According to the complaint, the company would manipulate old PDF lab reports from previous tests to forge the results.

Feuer urged those seeking COVID-19 tests to report any additional suspicious testing companies or services to the city.

"It's beyond outrageous that anyone would falsify COVID tests, as we allege happened here. If you get a negative test, you assume it's safe to go to work, visit family and friends, or take a vacation. But the victims of this alleged scheme might unknowingly have spread COVID to others or failed to receive timely and appropriate care themselves," said Feuer.

The complaint also alleged that Sameday Health would fake results for customers whose tests were never processed by labs. Sameday Health also allegedly charged insurance companies that were already paying for COVID-19 tests an additional fee for unnecessary medical consultations.

Sameday Health responded to the settlement saying:

"Sameday Health was founded in September 2020 in an effort to make fast, reliable, COVID testing available to everyone. In the early days, amidst the chaos of massive surges in demand for services, and shortages in supplies, we failed to meet the standards for excellence our customers deserve," the company told City News Service.

Another $3.9 million settlement was reached with Dr. Jeff Toll, a Los Angeles-based doctor that the lawsuit alleged was a partner in Sameday Health's alleged insurance fraud. Sameday Health required people paying with insurance to consent to and participate in consultations with doctors to obtain a COVID-19 test, while people paying with cash were not required to obtain consultations, according to the complaint.

"My office is dedicated to protecting the people of Los Angeles County from dangerous and costly scams like these and seeking appropriate action against those who take advantage of consumers through fraudulent business practices," Gascón said. "It is not only illegal but also unconscionable to defraud people seeking medical assistance in the midst of a public health crisis. We will continue to work to bring justice to victims of all crimes, including fraud."

He grew up in L.A. and once battled a Polar Vortex in -35 degree wind chill to deliver mail in OshKosh, Wisconsin.

Now he has another task, as the new postmaster for Redondo Beach and Hermosa.

Brian Cuellar started Feb. 26, after a year as postmaster at Venice Beach. He then transferred to Redondo, the base of operations for zip codes 90277, 90278 and 90254.

“This is where I plan to stay,” Cuellar said. “I’m very customer-service oriented. Everything our parents and grandparents came to expect from the Postal Service, that’s what I plan to implement and maintain here. We have a great staff overall.”

What about Hermosa Beach?

“We don’t really have any issues there, so I want to maintain that,” he said.

Cuellar begins after complaints in recent years led to involvement by Congressman Ted Lieu’s office and, in 2019, a summons from the Redondo Beach city council for the Los Angeles County Post Office Manager of Operations to respond to swelling complaints about late mail delivery, stolen gift cards and long lines at the Redondo post office.

Michael Coleman, county manager of operations, and Post Office Area Manager Art Santana both spoke to the council.

Today, to address late delivery issues, Cuellar oversees two new pilot projects. The SDUS (Small Delivery Unit Sorter) uses upgraded, proprietary technology, Cuellar said, to cut processing time by more than half. It has been in effect for a month.

“I championed this, to get this to happen here in Redondo,” said Cuellar, in his sixth year as a Postal employee.

The new equipment eliminates almost all hand-sorting of packages to improve accuracy and efficiency.

“We’ve seen results already. A really big uptick in compliments versus complaints,” Cuellar said.

The other pilot program, starting April 18, is “USPS Connect Local.”

Mail dropped in Redondo to be sent to Hermosa Beach will no longer go to the distribution center in South Central L.A., a day’s turnaround. Instead it is flagged by the computer to stay in Redondo Beach, processed and delivered same-day to Hermosa.

“We’re working on the details now,” said Cuellar. “All of this is going to make us a lot more efficient, a lot more dependable.”

On March 23, a hiring event at the Redondo Post Office drew 45 applicants for carrier assistant jobs, the entry-level to becoming a mail carrier. The Post Office aims to hire 10 to 15 people.

“In the last six months, I’d say things have improved,” said District Two city councilman Todd Loewenstein (District Two includes the Main Post Office). “Delivery is more reliable. I’m hearing fewer complaints. To me, it seems better.”

Before, when Loewenstein looked into it, it was frustrating.

“Every time I’d call, it was somebody new,” he said of the postmasters.

Carriers in the three zip codes still do routes at night, in some cases, to handle mail volumes that increased during the pandemic.

“As the carriers say, ‘Rain, sleet or snow, day or night, we’re out delivering,’” Cuellar said, the third postmaster in the past year.

“I chose to come here. I see the potential. Honestly, we’re just going back to the basics,” he said. “Communicate, so everyone knows what is expected. If there’s an issue I’m going to let you know, and if you are doing something great I’m going to let you know that too. It’s okay to praise people once in a while.”

Cuellar’s mother is a postal worker. He has a degree in social work from Azusa Pacific.

Fifteen people work in the distribution unit in the back of Redondo’s Post Office, from which 10,000 – 15,000 packages per day are delivered, along with 35,000 – 40,000 publications, and 100,000 pieces of letter mail.

Cuellar noted a goal to get staffing back to 100 percent in each department at Redondo.

On Tuesday morning, a cell phone rang in the lobby.

A man in line answered.

“You called me when I’m in line at the Redondo Beach Post Office. There’s three people in front of me, six or seven behind. It’s like this every time I come here. Ridiculous. They got one clerk.”

Minutes later, a second clerk’s window opened as scheduled.

The Redondo Main Post Office has 135 employees, including about 100 carriers on 89 routes.

“The office, the employees, with some guidance, some leadership, we can make this office great,” Cuellar said. “We can make this a model station.”

Back to 2019, the two county Post Office representatives who spoke to the city council told of systemic problems, such as the closure of Post Office processing facilities, how email and digital messaging had been expected to reduce Post Office mail, and how the growth in package shipments had not been anticipated.

Michael Coleman, the County Post Office Manager of Operations, told the council he had increased the number of carriers and got a new package processing machine. ER
