Located in the High Desert region of Southern California is the “oh, so appealing” Victor Valley region, an area made up of the thriving cities of Victorville, Apple Valley, Adelanto and Hesperia.
While known for its beautiful mountain vistas, sunny days and breathtaking night skies, the region also boasts excellent cuisine and retail options, great jobs, friendly, affordable neighborhoods and outdoor recreation that can’t be beat.
Sharon Wallace, who grew up in Illinois, moved to the area with her husband in 1998. They later spent about three years in Illinois, where she started her business, Sharon Wallace Photography. Eleven years ago, they moved back to Victorville – and she brought her business with her, focusing on glamour, headshots/personal branding and senior photography.

Why did you decide to move back to Victorville?Following my husband’s job. We’ve moved around a little bit. He’s an electrical engineer. We came back to our same house, our same location. We liked that area, and we always intended on going back.
How would you describe Victorville?If you ask people, they’ll say it’s a commuter town, so a lot of people who live there commute to work, although there are obviously people who come and start businesses. It’s a rapidly growing community. There’s always an influx of new people, and it’s very diverse, both in ethnicity and in restaurants, activities, everything you can do. If you’re in Victorville compared to other areas of the country, you have access to everything, like your big chain restaurants or shopping. You have those sorts of things, and you also have the mom-and-pop places and all of the diversity that comes with that.
What do you love about living in Victorville?I love the activities and things. Living in the desert, you have access to riding motorcycles. We have a Jeep, so we go out in our Jeep in the desert, and other people do their quads, so you have that desert activity – the camping and that sort of thing, hiking. There’s a new bike trail that you can ride on.
What’s something unique about the area?It’s diverse in age group. There are lots of senior living places and lots of communities in the surrounding area that are geared toward senior living … as well as new and up-and-coming people who might be currently commuting, but they are raising their families here.
What’s it like to run a business in Victorville?All the businesses in the communities sort of join together, and they support each other, so it’s like “let’s support local shopping” and that kind of thing. That’s been an incredibly positive experience. I really like that.
What is housing like in the area?The housing is very affordable. You can buy so much more in the High Desert compared to what you can buy down the hill (Los Angeles, Inland Empire, etc.) And there’s new housing coming up all the time.
What’s your favorite restaurant, and how much would dinner and drinks cost for two?The restaurant that we really like to go to is Mama Carpino’s in Apple Valley. It’s a little Italian place, a mom-and-pop place, and it’s been growing over the years, too. We really enjoy going there. I would say it would be under $100 for a nice meal and drinks.
What’s your favorite coffee shop, and how much is your go-to drink?Near me, I like The Grind (Coffee House). It’s a local mom-and-pop place. There’s indoor and outdoor seating. They are always playing music. It’s a nice little coffeehouse vibe. They do have food choices. I’ll meet my clients there and sit outside and show them their portfolio of their pictures. I’m not much for flavorings, so I just get either an espresso or a latte, but they have a big variety of lemonades, too. You can get a nice large coffee or lemonade for around $5.

Plans to build an intermodal logistics facility in Victorville were derailed on Tuesday when city council members dissolved a longstanding agreement to develop the Southern California Logistics Rail Authority.
Approved by the council in 2007, the project initially included a memorandum of understanding with the BNSF Railway Co. to explore the development of an intermodal logistics facility at Southern California Logistics Airport.
City staff explained that the termination of the agreement stems from economic conditions and the recent announcement by BNSF Railways of its intention to build an intermodal rail facility in Barstow.
“It has become apparent that there is no longer a need or justification to build rail facilities adjacent to Southern California Logistics Airport,” according to the city.
The Barstow International Gateway will be an estimated 4,500-acre new integrated rail facility on the west side of Barstow, BNSF officials said.
The $1.5 billion facility will consist of a rail yard, intermodal facility, and warehouses for transloading freight from international containers to domestic containers.
The rail facility will allow the direct transfer of containers from ships at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to trains for transport through the Alameda Corridor onto the BNSF mainline up to Barstow.
The expected date of completion has yet to be announced by BNSF, which states that the project will span about 4,500 acres on the west side of Barstow with a new "rail yard, intermodal facility and warehouses for transloading freight from international containers to domestic containers.”
The company also predicts the project will create 20,000 "direct and indirect jobs," though it's unclear how many of these jobs will be in Barstow versus those at the two cargo-receiving hubs connected to the ports.
The Memorandum of Understanding with BNSF and the city included negotiations to explore the development of an intermodal rail facility at the 8,500-acre SCLA.
The proposed intermodal facility was designed to be a major component of a proposed 3,500-acre rail complex at the airport.
Plans also called for 20 million square-feet of manufacturing and distribution uses within the proposed rail facility.
“This MOU with BNSF is a major milestone in our effort to convert an abandoned Air Force base into a vital, thriving industry,” said former Victorville Mayor Terry Caldwell in 2007.
In 2001, the city/the SCLA Authority and the Former Victorville Redevelopment Agency entered into a Joint Exercise of Powers Agreement to form the SCLRA. Since its establishment, the SCLRA has been essentially dormant.

Back in January, the lead investor for the privately funded $8 billion Brightline West high-speed rail proposal that would connect Las Vegas to Southern California declared the project "at the one yard line." Late last month, Brightline released its draft federal environmental document needed before construction and announced approval of the sale of land in Ranch Cucamonga for the construction of the station at the California terminus.
The interested public can weigh in Brightline's plans at hearings on Saturday, November 12, and Tuesday November 15.
If it was at the one yard line in January, today the ball is maybe just inches from the goal line. After the final environmental documents are approved, construction could start in 2026. Brightline West already has approvals for construction of a 170-mile portion of the line from Victor Valley, California, into Las Vegas, where a terminus is planned about two miles south of the Strip in Downtown Las Vegas. Operations could begin as soon as 2030. Full funding for the project has not been identified, with Brightline planning to seek both federal and private dollars once the environmental documents are approved.
With Rancho Cucamonga already home to a Metrolink Station that connects to downtown L.A. Union Station, with a little coodination people should be able to travel between L.A. and Las Vegas in roughly three and a half hours: Two hours and twenty minutes on the high-speed rail line, just over an hour on Metrolink with some flex time for a transfer. Driving between the two cities takes six hours by car or bus (or longer when the freeways are clogged, which is not uncommon). Brightline predicts they will bring in 11 million passengers through Rancho Cucamonga with this transit hub.
Brightline West high-speed trains are expected to reach top speeds around 180 miles per hour. Brightline plans to run 23 trains daily during the first year of operations. The rail will be powered by overhead electric lines, the industry standard for high-speed rail.
Brightline is already running relatively high speed (top speed 110 mph) trains in Florida connecting Central Florida and South Florida. Taking a "phased approach" to bringing service online, Brightline Florida trains began operating in 2018 and will be completing Phase II to Orlando Airport, in the next several months.
