SUN CITY WEST, AZ — A man is recovering at a hospital after being stung by nearly 2,000 bees in Sun City West on Saturday, August 21.
According to Arizona Fire and Medical Authority (AFMA), a maintenance worker in his 50s was working at Pebblebrook Golf Course when he encountered a beehive.
It's unclear exactly what led to the attack, but somehow the man disturbed a hive.
When AFMA crews arrived they said the man was covered in bees. One of the crew members stated, "We thought it was grass clippings on his face but as we got closer, we realized those were actually bees".
The fire crews wore bee hoods and turnouts to protect themselves while using a hose line filled with foam to subdue the bees.
The man was rushed to a hospital where he had to be intubated for about a week, according to AFMA officials.
On Monday, August 28, officials announced the man was no longer intubated and is expected to make a full recovery.
ABC15 spoke with Craig Powell and J.R. Derringer who were on the front 9 of Pebblebrook golf course during the incident, when their day went from relaxing to traumatizing.
As they were golfing they noticed a worker on the course.
“He stopped and he started swinging his arms,” said Craig Powell. “We didn’t pay a lot of attention to it at first.”
But then they saw the employee running on the fairway.
AFMA says it has responded to six bee incidents this year and 15 in 2022.

The executive director for the Arizona Public Health Association will be a guest speaker at an upcoming West Valley event.
The Northwest Valley Branch of the American Association of University Women will host long-time public health enthusiast Will Humble to speak at the group’s first general meeting of its 2023-24 calendar year. The meeting starts at 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 21 in the Sun City West Foundation Webb Room, 14465 RH Johnson Blvd., Sun City West.
The group’s September theme is “School Safety,” and Humble’s focus will be on school/mass shootings.
Humble’s 40 years in public health includes more than two decades at the Arizona Department of Health Services, where he served in various roles including director from 2009 to 2015. He continues his involvement in health policy as executive director for the AZPHA.
AAUW is a leading voice promoting equity and education for women and girls. Since its founding in 1881, AAUW members have taken positions on fundamental issues of the day, including education, social, and economic advocacy.
Membership is open to anyone holding an associate's degree, bachelor's or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

Sun City area residents will get a chance to see the new facilities for Olive Branch Senior Center.
The facility made the move to a renovated building on Banner Health property on 103rd Avenue just north of Grand Avenue in April. Officials will host an open house 1-3 p.m. Thursday, June 22 at the new location, 13049 N. 103rd Ave., Sun City.
The new location, in a former Banner storage building, is a 25,000-square-foot facility and is three times bigger than the previous location. The Banner Olive Branch Senior Center works to maintain and improve seniors’ nutrition as an essential service. According to Banner Olive Branch Senior Center officials, Olive Branch strives to help older adults maintain health and independence and avoid complications from chronic health conditions.
According to America’s Health Rankings, 14.7% of adults 60 and older in Arizona are experiencing food insecurity. Banner Olive Branch Senior Center offers food programs that address food insecurity that many homebound, low-income and disabled in the Sun Cities seniors face.
The five programs include the food pantry program, where seniors get to visit the food pantry daily to pick free groceries for individuals. The new food pantry is much larger with state of the art shelving for easy picking, as well as large industrial sized coolers for individuals to pick cold items. The Mobile pantry comes once per month with a semi-truck delivery from St. Mary’s Food Bank that offers all community members bags of food. Last year the food pantry collected and distributed more than 1 million pounds of food. As recently as April 14, a record 192 people visited the pantry.
In the old facility, the cooler and freezer areas were maxed out, so having a full large walk-in refrigerator and larger freezer area is a luxury, according to Dawn Gielau, Banner Olive Branch Senior Center director.
Volunteers had a more challenging time at the old facility. But with the new scale and storage spaces, the process is much easier and can cut back on the amount of lifting for volunteers, she added.
The home-delivered meals program delivers hot, nutritious meals delivered to homebound seniors, which will be made in the brand new kitchen by staff and volunteers. Delivery staff also provides wellness checks during services and averages 200 meals per day.
The congregate meals program makes meals for individuals in the dining room.
“Now the seniors can choose what they want to eat on this serving station and serve themselves,” Gielau said.
Jodie Snyder, Banner Health marketing and public relations, said the serving station also gives the seniors a sense of independence.
The older location held 160 seniors in the dining room, while now 208 seniors can dine together. Last year, the facility averaged 80 congregate meals per day. The takeout program is also an option for seniors who visit the center.
Currently, the breakfast program is available every week day.
On top of the food program, Banner Olive Branch Senior Center offers health screenings, counseling, transportation, legal assistance and educational outreach.
The new facility has two health rooms thanks to a grant from the National Council on Aging Wellness Center. Gielau said the Senior Center will host four flu and COVID booster clinics this fall.
A movie room complete with a large television and furniture, library and a chair exercise room for seniors to have an opportunity for fitness are all available in a dedicated space.
Also located in the dining room, a stage is available for speakers, entertainers and the Monday Mending Group, who repair clothes on-site.

The work on Viewpoint Lake in Sun City moved on to another phase.
With the slopes covered by liner and concrete banks though nearly all of phases 1 and 2, workers completed the liner on phase 3. The former phases are near Lakeview Center, 10626 W. Thunderbird Blvd., and around Emerald Point, Cameo Drive, Bayside Road and some on Kannapali Point, respectively. Now liner is installed from the tip of Kannapali Point all the way around the east end of the lake to nearly the boat ramp at 105th Avenue.
Kevin McCurdy, Recreation Centers of Sun City interim general manager, said the work, being done by Pacific Aquascapes, appears to be on schedule to begin refilling the lake Friday, Aug. 4, with the expectation it will be full by the end of September.

As a result, Custer spends his time remodeling homes which, of course, takes a lot of money. His cash flow suffered a setback recently when he was paying bills online and made a mistake. He was trying to send $1,015 to pay off his Discover credit card when he mistakenly hit EPCOR water and sent the sum to the water company instead. “So, I went in and I was kind of in a hurry, and Discover is right below the line for EPCOR,” he said. “I accidentally put it toward EPCOR and hit submit.”
He said he immediately realized the mistake and contacted EPCOR, only to be told they would return his money in 3 to 4 weeks. Richard said he believes that since EPCOR got his money in milliseconds, so why can’t they return it to him just as fast? “I’ve got two construction projects going on, and I need my money back. And they seem oblivious to that fact,” Custer said.
After waiting three weeks for his money, he finally contacted On Your Side to find out if they could expedite the return of the funds. In a statement, an EPCOR spokesperson told On Your Side that taking up to 4 weeks to return a consumer’s overpayment “is common industry practice and not specific to EPCOR.” The statement said that Custer’s refund is on its way and was processed in the appropriate timeframe.
After On Your Side’s involvement, Custer finally got his check on the 4th-week deadline, but he said that without On Your Side, he’s not sure how long he would have been waiting for the money to be returned. “It’s just not right that they can hold on to your money for that long and expect you to just wait,” he said.
