EXCLUSIVE: Former Disney TV studio executive and CAA agent Elizabeth Newman has joined Literate as its first new partner since the television-focused boutique management and production company was launched in early 2018 by founding partners A.B. Fischer and Dennis Kim.

With her background in television, publishing and book adaptations, Newman will manage a curated roster of film & TV writer/showrunners and will expand Literate’s business in representing screen rights for intellectual property creators, rightsholders, and estates. She also will work with authors, journalists, and playwrights transitioning to Hollywood.

This marks a return to representation for Newman who started her entertainment career at CAA. During her nearly 15-year tenure, she was a TV Literary & Media Rights agent, representing TV writer/creators, showrunners, producers, directors, and intellectual property, brokering major rights deals on behalf of bestselling authors such as Anne Rice and James Patterson.

At the end of 2019, Newman segued to the TV executive ranks, joining then-Fox21 TV Studios as VP, Development. There, she identified talent and literary material and developed scripted series, including Hulu’s Dopesick, ABC’s Alaska Daily, and NatGeo’s upcoming Genius: MLK/X.

A year later, Newman was named co-head and subsequently head of the newly launched Creative Acquisitions Department at Disney Television Studios. She played a key role in identifying and acquiring over 200 properties for development and production and sourced material for the studios’ talent and overall deals. She left Disney in March of this year amid restructuring and company-wide layoffs.

“We are thrilled to welcome Elizabeth to the Literate team as our first new partner since the company’s founding,” Fischer and Kim said in a joint statement. “We share the same values and have been friends and fans of hers for years. Her impeccable taste, breadth of relationships, and expertise in identifying and securing IP rights makes her an incredibly valuable resource for our clients. Most importantly, we’re counting on Elizabeth to help us break our record for fastest time to exit an escape room at this year’s holiday party.”

In addition to Fischer and Kim, at Literate, Newman joins manager Jessica Shulman. The company’s client roster includes Suits creator Aaron Korsh, Silk/The Walking Dead‘s Angela Kang, Bridgerton creator Chris Van Dusen, One Piece co-showrunner Steven Maeda, La Brea creator David Appelbaum, Luke Cage creator Cheo Coker, NOS4A2 creator Jami O’Brien, incoming WGAE President Lisa Takeuchi Cullen and current Emmy nominees Ted Cohen (Succession), Dipika Guha (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), and Stacy Traub and Jihan Crowther (Daisy Jones & The Six).

“I have known A.B. and Dennis for years and have always deeply admired their integrity, zealous advocacy for their esteemed clients, and respect for the power of the written word,” Newman said. “I am excited to bring my insights and experience as both a buyer and a seller to Literate and to serve as a strategic and creative partner for talented and ambitious storytellers.”

Elizabeth Hurley Says Matthew Perry Was A Nightmare On Romantic Comedy

Matthew Perry was supposedly a nightmare to work with in the midst of his battle with drugs and alcohol. Speaking to Yahoo! Matthew Perry was supposedly a nightmare to work with in the midst of his battle with drugs and alcohol. Speaking to Yahoo! Entertainment in 2022, Elizabeth Hurley said while she has fond memories of starring with Perry in the 2002 romantic comedy Serving Sara, “it was a nightmare working with him at that time and, as it’s now known, our movie was shut down because of his addiction.”

Years ago, while battling addiction, Friends star Matthew Perry worked with Elizabeth Hurley on the rom-com Serving Sara, which stopped production so he could attend rehab,

“We were in a force majeure and had to all sit at home twiddling our thumbs for some time,” she added. Matthew Perry admitted as much in his memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing. He wrote about Serving Sara and how his addiction stopped production as he was forced into rehab. The actor admitted that Elizabeth Hurley and director Reginald Hudlin were “pissed off” about the situation.

“It was a nightmare working with him at that time and, as it’s now known, our movie was shut down because of his addiction.”

However, when Matthew Perry returned to the set, Elizabeth Hurley said, “he was fabulous,” despite the needing to “re-voice” everything that was filmed before his two-month rehab stay. Perry detailed in his memoir that the reason for re-recording all the dialogue was the pronounced slurring of his words during the initial filming of those scenes.

“Obviously, he was having a tough time, but he was still very charming and a lovely person to work with,” Elizabeth Hurley continued. “But you could see he was suffering for sure.” At the time, the actress had not read Matthew Perry’s book. However, she enjoyed some of the excerpts. “He’s a very funny writer like he’s a very funny man. He’s an incredibly gifted comedian. His way with words is fantastic,” she added.

Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing sees Matthew Perry speaking candidly about his struggles with addiction over the years. The actor admitted that he couldn’t remember large portions of his time working on Friends due to his addiction. Perry estimated that he spent approximately $9 million to get sober. By May 2021, the actor was completely sober.

Matthew Perry, best known for his portrayal of Chandler Bing in Friends, tragically passed away on October 28. According to reports, Perry was discovered at his residence in Los Angeles and appeared to have drowned. Initially responding to a call for cardiac arrest, first responders subsequently found Perry unresponsive in a jacuzzi. He was just 54 years old.

“Obviously, he was having a tough time, but he was still very charming and a lovely person to work with. But you could see he was suffering for sure.”

Matthew Perry was catapulted to stardom for his iconic portrayal of Chandler Bing. He played the character for 10 seasons, from 1994 to 2004, earning an Emmy nomination for his performance. In 2021, he reunited with his fellow cast members for the special Friends: The Reunion, which was initially released on Max (then HBO Max), where the group reminisced about their time on the show.

Following his tenure on Friends, Matthew Perry worked on various television projects, with roles in shows like Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Mr. Sunshine, The Good Wife, Go On, The Good Fight, and The Odd Couple. He made a special guest appearance alongside his Friends co-star Courteney Cox in her popular series Cougar Town.

Matthew Perry left an indelible mark on the silver screen roles in movies such as 17 Again, Birds of America, Three to Tango, Numb, Fools Rush In, The Whole Nine Yards, and The Whole Ten Yards. Additionally, he ventured into the realm of voiceover work, lending his voice to the primary antagonist, Benny, in the popular video game Fallout: New Vegas.

We are a family. There is so much to say, but right now, we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss.”

Friends co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane also released a statement along with executive producer Kevin Bright. “We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment – not just to his work, but in life as well. 'I Wanted To Talk About It Forever': Two Hearts And A Moment Of Clarity

Elizabeth Co admits that school was definitely not her thing as a kid. She preferred books and daydreaming over paying attention in class.

"There was no subject that really stuck out to me," she said. "I was really not a spectacular student at all."

But when she took her first high school biology class, everything changed. For one, she had a supportive teacher who, for the first time, acted as an academic mentor. But Co said what really attracted her to the subject was all of the lessons on the human body. She became obsessed with processes like cellular respiration and developed the beginnings of what she called a "crush" on the heart.

"It is just so elegantly structured," said Co. "It's exquisitely simple and yet so very effective."

Like a lot of students who have an interest in biology, Co started college thinking she'd become a doctor. She enrolled at Mount Holyoke College as a pre-med major but quickly realized it wasn't going to be a good fit. She said that moment of clarity came during a meeting with other pre-med students who were talking about why they wanted to be a doctor.

"I was like well, gosh, I really, really don't like sick people at all. So I thought maybe I'll be a pathologist and all of my patients would be dead," she laughed. "But I couldn't quite see myself dealing with snot, for example."

Searching For The Right Career

Co remembered feeling a little lost after that revelation. She tried following other paths, like becoming a high school biology teacher, but nothing felt right. But even though she felt like she was floundering, her passion for the human body remained constant.

"I mean, plants are cool, but for me, it was always bodies," she said.

"I just knew that I wanted to tell people about this. And I wanted to explain it. And I wanted to talk about it forever."

Elizabeth Co

She filled her schedule each year with as many related classes as possible from immunology to neurobiology. And then, one day senior year, another moment of clarity.

Co's advanced physiology class took a field trip to a local physiologist's office. He handed her two human hearts: one that came from a person with normal blood pressure and one from a person who had chronic high blood pressure.

"I was looking at this story that had unfolded for these two individuals over time. In my hands," she said. Co could distinctly see and feel how the condition had changed one of the hearts: the ventricles were thickened by years of struggling to pump blood through the body.

"I just knew that I wanted to tell people about this," Co said. "And I wanted to explain it. And I wanted to talk about it forever."

That's when her path to becoming a professor and researcher started to become clear.

Following Passion

Co will emphatically tell you that she has long loved her job. In her early career, she has treasured moments in the lab, before research would be published, when she was the only one who knew the answer to a particular question.

"It's intoxicating," she said.

Today, she's most passionate about teaching.

Holding office hours is a big part of Co's job. But many of the questions students ask have nothing to do with classwork. A lot of them come looking for advice on career and life goals.

"They very much think it's about getting that next internship and that next internship," she said. "They're almost putting together the portfolio that leads them to the place, rather than exploring themselves."

Which is where her own story becomes a teaching tool. Co said the key is following your curiosity.

"As you go through life, sometimes there are these moments," she advised. "Listen to them."
