Fort Collins will see roughly 63% totality from the April 8 total solar eclipse.

If you want to see complete totality, you can drive the more than 12 hours to Dallas — the nearest large city in the path of totality (good luck with lodging) — or you can sit back, relax and watch it on your computer.

NASA is offering coverage from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time as the eclipse travels through Mexico and across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine in the U.S.

Coverage will include live views from across the path, expert commentary, live demonstrations and more, according to its website.

More:Where to watch the eclipse if you live in Fort Collins

What will you see during the 2024 total solar eclipse in Colorado?

Colorado will only see a partial solar eclipse starting around 11:30 a.m. with max partial eclipse at 12:41 p.m. in Fort Collins. The eclipse will end around 1:30 p.m.

You can enter your zip code in our online tool and view our interactive 2024 solar eclipse map to get a better idea of what it will look like here.

Do you still need to wear safety glasses if you are not in the path of totality?

NASA says you must look through safe eclipse glasses or a safe handheld solar viewer at all times when watching partial phases of the solar eclipse directly with your eyes. Those phases happen before and after totality. You can also use an indirect viewing method, such as a pinhole projector.

It's only safe to view the eclipse directly without proper eye protection when the moon completely obscures the sun’s bright face. As soon as you see even a little bit of the bright sun reappear after totality, immediately protect your eyes.

Where can I find eclipse glasses in 2024?

Eclipse glasses have their safety certified by the International Organizations for Standardization. You can tell if a pair of solar eclipse glasses meets today’s standards if they are labeled ISO 12312-2, sometimes written as ISO 12312-2:2015.

You can find a list of certified solar viewer and filter suppliers at https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/viewers-filters.

How does the 2024 total solar eclipse compare to the last one in 2017?

The path of totality revealing the sun's outer atmosphere, called the corona, will be much wider this year compared to 2017, according to NASA.

During the 2017 total solar eclipse, the moon was a little farther away from Earth than it will be during the upcoming total solar eclipse, causing the path of that eclipse to be a little skinnier.

For comparison, in 2017, the path ranged from 62 to 71 miles wide. During this year's eclipse, the path over North America will range between 108 and 122 miles wide.

The 2024 eclipse path will also pass over more cities and densely populated areas than the 2017 path did.

This year's eclipse will have a longer totality in the U.S., lasting about 4 minutes, 26 seconds at its peak in Texas. In 2017, the longest period of totality was 2 minutes, 42 seconds.

During the 2024 eclipse, the sun will be in or near solar maximum, which will likely create streamers visible throughout the corona and provide a better chance of seeing prominences, which appear as bright pink curls or loops coming off of the sun, according to NASA.

We live in a time when many local businesses and restaurants in Northern Colorado have been closing. It feels like every day there is a new closure.

It is great to see a local business build and expand. It uplifts us and gives us hope that local businesses can thrive in our community. A taco spot in Fort Collins is growing and we could not be more excited for them.

The Taco Stop, a staple in Fort Collins since 2012, is moving to a new location.

The Taco Stop started as a food cart, then a food truck, then an official restaurant. The Taco Stop was built from the ground up in Fort Collins and we are proud that they are staying locally.

The Taco Stop says their primary focus is on the community and great food.

The Taco Stop is currently located on South College Avenue. If you have not been yet, you need to make it a priority to stop by. They have amazing tacos. Recently, I tried a taco on their menu with french fries on it. My mind was blown.

The Taco Stop will be moving to Scotch Pines Village on S Lemay Avenue. The Taco Stop says they will be moving to their new location in June of this year.

Colorado Open Space Emerges to Replace Cancelled Concert Venue Project

A recent boost from lottery dollars brings a once-proposed concert venue touted as Red Rocks North a step closer to becoming a happy trail for you.

Great Outdoors Colorado awarded Larimer County $1.5 million this month to help advance the Heaven’s Door Ranch conservation easement project that Northern Colorado governments cooperated on moving forward in 2022.

The 1,547-acre ranch sits 4 miles west of Loveland on U.S. 34.

At that time, Larimer County, Loveland, and Fort Collins governments joined finances to buy the land for $9 million, half of what the owners initially marketed it for. This $1.5 million state grant reimburses part of the purchase price.

“We fully intend this property to join the ranks as one of the crown jewels of the incredible open space system in Northern Colorado, protecting significant resource values and providing future public access," Daylan Figgs, director of Larimer County’s Department of Natural Resources, said in a Larimer County press release.

Pictures indeed prove that.

Here’s the marketing video of when the land was on the market.

The county has since removed the house and buildings, with materials being sold, repurposed and recycled.

In the early 2000s, the owners proposed turning part of the land into a concert venue that could accommodate up to 9,000 attendees.

The 1,547-acre acquisition ultimately will connect with other open-space projects west of Loveland and silence future development in the area.

GOCO also shared the property’s wildlife value, saying, “The property boasts diverse wildlife habitats and movement corridors, and its grasslands provide winter range for elk and pronghorn and year-round habitat for mule deer. The foothills shrublands are essential breeding habitats for migratory and resident bird species and serve as important seasonal food sources and cover for mule deer, elk, black bears, mountain lions, and bobcats. Its ponderosa pine woodlands provide breeding habitat for birds and support small mammals, including Allen’s and Townsend’s big-eared bats. Its steep hogbacks and canyons provide critical perch sites for raptors and birds.”

The landowner family owns Alberto-Culver Co., makers of Alberto VO5 and operators of Sally Beauty supply and other companies. The Fortune 500 company is publicly traded. They reached out to the county to sell the property.

The state grant is part of GOCO’s Centennial Program, which invests in “high-value, once-in-a-generation visions and projects that will create lasting impacts on the Centennial State and future generations.” A portion of lottery dollars fund Great Outdoors Colorado.

Fort Collins and Loveland will co-hold the conservation easement.

Public access is scheduled to open in 2030.

While two other local school orchestras were performing at a national festival in Indianapolis, another was in San Francisco as an invited participant in the Festival of Gold.

Boltz Middle School’s Chamber Orchestra was asked to send in an audition tape and then selected to participate Saturday through Tuesday in a variety of clinics run by top orchestra musicians from throughout the country and then perform at San Francisco’s Davies Symphony Hall, director Melissa Claeys said Thursday.

It was the perfect opportunity to showcase the musical talents of “a really special group of kids,” said Claeys, now in her 11th year at Boltz.

Boltz was one of three school orchestras participating in the Festival of Gold in San Francisco, she said. The organization hosts similar events in Chicago and Nashville, Tennessee. High school and middle school orchestras, bands and choirs can qualify by earning a qualifying score from judges at state or regional competitions, she said, or through a submitted audition tape, as Boltz did.

Claeys said she has an unusually talented group of musicians in the Chamber Orchestra, an audition-only ensemble that meets before school three days a week, and was trying to find opportunities for them to perform on a larger stage outside of Fort Collins when she received a call from Festival of Gold organizers asking her to submit an audition tape.

She credited the success of the Fort Collins High School orchestra program and its director, John Hermanson, for raising the profile and talent level of young orchestra musicians in the area. Hermanson serves as chair of the Colorado American String Teachers Association’s annual large group festival.

“We work closely with John, and John does such an amazing job with our ASTA festival, bringing in national-level clinicians, so word has spread about the orchestra programs in Fort Collins,” Claeys said.

The Festival of Gold judges listened to the Boltz Chamber Orchestra, liked what they heard, and invited the group to participate along with two other orchestras and a variety of others in the four-day event. Students attended workshops and clinics with top musicians, rehearsed for their performance and joined an orchestra from a California school on stage for a combined performance under the direction of well-known music educator Robert Gillespie, a retired professor from Ohio State University’s School of Music.

Four members of the Boltz orchestra were also selected to provide musical accompaniment for a school choir that was performing at the festival, Claeys said.

Judges, all respected musicians, provided feedback on the students’ performances.

Boltz’s trip overlapped by two days with the Music for All National Festival in Indianapolis, where Hermanson’s top orchestra from Fort Collins High and the top orchestra from Lesher Middle School, which like Boltz feeds into Fort Collins High, were performing as invited participants.

The Festival of Gold workshops, clinics and rehearsals were all held at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis hotel, where the Boltz orchestra stayed.

Sightseeing excursions, Claeys said, included walking on the Golden Gate Bridge, visits to Chinatown, Fisherman’s Wharf, Ghirardelli Square, Golden Gate Park and a San Francisco Bay cruise. The group used San Francisco’s trolleys and street cars exclusively to get around the city for one full day, she said.

“It was just a really well-rounded rich experience for our students, with a lot of facets,” she said.

The experiment to add a coffee and espresso bar in the taproom at Snowbank Brewing, 225 N. Lemay Ave., has come to an end, while a new coffee shop opened in Poudre Canyon.

Owners of The Morning Grind closed the coffee shop earlier this month, saying in a Facebook post that "despite our best efforts it seems that a coffee shop is not viable in this location." In the post, they said they were searching for a better location or new people to take over the coffee bar. "Thank you to all who supported us, brought your friends and spread the good word for us."

The coffee bar was a collaboration between Snowbank Brewing and local coffee roaster Wander Coffee in response to the "gentle pullback" in the craft beer market and increased interest in nonalcoholic and healthier drinks, Snowbank representatives said in late October.

In addition to The Morning Grind closing, Starbucks announced it will close its downtown Fort Collins location April 12.

Kind Bean opens in Poudre Canyon

Dani Grant, owner of the Mishawaka Inn, has opened Kind Bean in a converted vintage Airstream. It is the first amenity to launch at the upcoming Riverside Colorado Canyon Resort — the former Columbine Lodge — and the Mish's new sister company.

Kind Bean, 9940 Poudre Canyon Road, will offer a small menu featuring gourmet espresso, fair trade coffee, baked goods from Me Oh My Pie and Mishawaka breakfast items on a patio with picturesque views.

"We are thrilled to unveil the Kind Bean to the Poudre Canyon and Fort Collins communities," Grant said in a news release. "Our mission is to offer an exquisite coffee product and an experience embracing the natural beauty of our surroundings. We believe in sustainability, excellent coffee, and a welcoming space for everyone to enjoy."

Initially, the Kind Bean will be open only on weekends, but it will expand "once we get our coffee legs under us," according to its website.
