The 5 Best Beaches Near Fullerton, California

Fullerton, located in the heart of Orange County, California, is a bustling city known for its rich history, higher education institutions, and lively music scene. While it might not be directly on the coastline, it’s just a short drive away from some of Southern California’s most beautiful beaches. If you're in the Fullerton area and craving some sun, sand, and surf, here are the top five beaches you should consider visiting:

Huntington Beach

Often referred to as “Surf City, USA,” Huntington Beach boasts a spectacular stretch of golden sands and consistent waves. Ideal for both surfers and families, this beach offers a picturesque pier, beach volleyball courts, fire pits, and a lively downtown area filled with shops, restaurants, and entertainment. The oceanfront biking path is perfect for those looking to rent bikes or rollerblades, and the dog beach section allows your furry friends to join in on the fun.

Bolsa Chica State Beach

Just north of Huntington, Bolsa Chica State Beach is a quieter alternative for those looking to avoid larger crowds. Famed for its ecological reserve, it’s a haven for bird-watchers and nature enthusiasts. The gentle waves make it a top spot for novice surfers, while the fire pits provide an ideal setting for an evening beach bonfire. If you’re interested in fishing, the Bolsa Chica inlet is known to be one of the region's best spots.

Seal Beach

This small-town beach, located to the northwest of Fullerton, offers a charming Main Street lined with unique boutiques and quaint cafes. The pier is one of the longest in California and provides a peaceful setting for a walk or fishing. The waves here are perfect for longboarding, and the community exudes a laid-back atmosphere that’s perfect for a relaxing beach day.

Laguna Beach

A bit further south, but absolutely worth the drive, is the stunning Laguna Beach. Known for its artistic community, cove-like beaches, and crystal-clear waters, this beach destination offers more than just sunbathing. The rocky tide pools are a joy to explore, and the town itself hosts numerous art festivals and gallery walks throughout the year. Beaches such as Thousand Steps and Crystal Cove offer unique experiences for those willing to explore.

Newport Beach

Upscale, vibrant, and packed with activities, Newport Beach is where luxury meets the ocean. The beach is split into two sections: the harbor area, with its boat-filled marinas and Balboa Island, and the ocean side, where sandy shores meet pristine waters. Whether you want to rent a kayak, go whale watching, shop at high-end boutiques, or just lounge on the sands, Newport Beach has something for everyone.

In conclusion, while Fullerton itself might not be a beach town, its proximity to the Pacific coast gives residents and visitors access to some of the best beaches Southern California has to offer. From the surf-friendly waves of Huntington Beach to the artsy alcoves of Laguna Beach, there’s a sandy stretch perfect for every kind of beach-goer. So pack your sunscreen, grab a beach towel, and explore the coastal wonders near Fullerton.

CSUF Marine Geologist: Tropical Storms Like Hurricane Hilary Could Significantly Change Southern California’s Coast

Newswise — Experts anticipate that more than a year’s worth of rain could fall within a couple of days in some areas of Southern California this weekend. The National Hurricane Center on Friday issued the first-ever Tropical Storm Watch for Southern California. The region hasn’t experienced a tropical storm since 1939.

Joe Carlin, associate professor of geological sciences, notes that it is important to think of Hurricane Hilary as an isolated random event or possibly the start of a new trend. However, researchers won’t know the answer to that for many years.

What researchers do know is that these types of storms can create significant changes along the coast, which can be problematic for areas that have coastal development.

Carlin said: “In the case of Hilary, this could cause large waves that will move sand around — erode sand from one area and deposit sand somewhere else — erode cliffs and damage coastal structures. These storms may also cause a storm surge, which is flooding from the ocean that can inundate coastal areas inland from the beaches.

“The storm could bring heavy rains to the area which, in addition to flooding inland areas, could transport significant amounts of sand to the coast where it will be deposited, changing the coastline.

“In terms of episodic events, these create abrupt and significant changes to coastal areas and coastal processes. The stronger the event, like a tropical storm or hurricane, the faster and greater coastal change occurs.

“We cannot say that the storm Hilary on its own is related to climate change as this is a singular weather event and climate is the long-term average of weather. However, if we were to see multiple tropical storms or hurricanes over the next several years and decades, that may be related to climate change.”

FULLERTON, Calif. — Cal State Fullerton men's basketball hung tough with No. 17 San Diego State before falling 83-57 on the road Monday night in its season opener.

"San Diego State is a really great basketball team," said Cal State Fullerton Head Coach Dedrique Taylor. "I thought there were times where we had a chance to exert our dominance, but we didn't always respond the right way. I love playing San Diego State because they give you a direction in terms of what you need to address with your ball club."

DJ Brewton led the Titans with 13 points, six assists, four steals and two rebounds in a team-high 34 minutes of action. Max Jones had 11 points and eight rebounds while Donovan Oday also reached double figures in scoring with 10 points, two rebounds and a pair of steals.

Despite shooting 33% from the floor to the Aztecs' 45% clip, the Titans out-paced SDSU in offensive rebounds (13-11), second-chance points (12-7) and bench points (17-7).

After falling behind 14-0 in the opening minutes of the game, Fullerton clawed its way back with a Vince Lee dunk and Oday lay-in capping a 7-0 run. Kendrick De Luna scored in the paint and a Jones triple then brought the score to 19-14 midway through the half.

Brewton hit a trey of his own before Jones nailed another triple later in the half. Grayson Carper slammed home a one-handed dunk following a De Luna block as the Titans trailed by just two at the half, 37-35.

SDSU once again came out quick to start the second half, though, taking a 54-42 lead five minutes in and forcing a Titan timeout. Oday, Beril Kabamba and Brewton scored baskets in the paint but the Aztecs extended their lead to 72-52 with 7:33 left. Brewton and Oday each scored transition layups down the stretch but SDSU came away with the 83-57 win.

Up next, the Titans face La Sierra at Titan Gym on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m. PT for their home opener.
