Inglewood tells Taylor Swift fans: No dancing in the middle of the parking lot at SoFi Stadium

You may have seen one of the many videos circulating on social media of fans gathering outside a Taylor Swift concert, dancing and singing along to the sounds of her Eras tour. But bad news for Swifties in the Los Angeles area: If Inglewood has its way, you won’t get the chance to “Tayl-gate” at SoFi Stadium.

In June Swifties assembled on the north and south lawns of Soldier Field in Chicago; in Philadelphia, Swift’s hometown, thousands of fans gathered in the parking lot of the Lincoln Financial Center. For people who couldn’t spend a chunk of cash on tickets, this was the next best thing: enjoying her music outside the venue’s walls, a practice that’s come to be known as Tayl-gating.

Ahead of the Eras tour show at SoFi Stadium, however, the city of Inglewood’s message is Tayl-gating “wouldn’t be effective here.”

Mayor James T. Butts Jr. said SoFi Stadium is a quarter-mile away from the sidewalk area that rings the property. The closest is on Prairie Avenue, and “the sidewalk of Prairie is not wide enough” for people to gather.

The city already doesn’t allow people to block sidewalks, citing public safety concerns. If Swifties set up shop there, he said, they would be asked to move along.

And the chances of hearing Swift from Prairie Avenue would be slim. Butts said the sound would be faint that far away from the stadium.

So what’s in between the stadium and the nearest sidewalk? Several of the stadium’s parking lots. But hanging out there without a ticket will be, shall we say, strongly discouraged.

As part of the guidance it’s offering attendees, SoFi reminds concert-goers that they’ll need a ticket to enter the stadium property.

Aug. 1, 2023

“SoFi Stadium reserves the right to confirm that guests have tickets at any time,” the SoFi website states.

It also notes that guests cannot remain in the parking lots or outside of the stadium once the show begins.

“At the time of the headlining act, any guests in the parking lots or outside of the stadium will be asked to enter the stadium with their ticket,” it says.

If someone doesn’t have a ticket, they “will be required to leave the property.”

But before you cue up “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” check out the Swiftie community events being held throughout Los Angeles. Restaurants, hotels, theaters and more venues are hosting Taylor Swift events where you can celebrate with others who don’t have a ticket.

Welcome to Dogg in tha Box. May Snoop Dogg take your order?

In celebration of their recent partnership, Jack in the Box announced that a Snoop Dogg-inspired pop-up restaurant will be open in Inglewood until July 2.

“Dogg in tha Box is the mash-up fans never knew they needed but will never forget, transporting them to what Jack in the Box would look like in the Snoopiverse,” a news release said.

“Fans of the two California legends can order from a totally Snoopified menu: Snizzacks and Sidez from Curleez to Jalepenizzle Poppers, to Bizurgers like the D-O-Double-Jack and Tasy Mothercluckers (Jack’s famous chicken sandwiches).”

The pop-up experience is located at 1220 Centinela Ave. in Inglewood and is open all day long.

Guests who visit the limited-time pop-up experience can sit and take photos on Snoop Dogg’s throne, see the Snoop Dogg and Jack Box mural, see themed lowriders, purchase 90s themed merchandise and more, according to a news release.

Fans can also get a free Snoopadelic Shake by purchasing the new Snoop’s Munchie Meal at the event.

Those who can’t make it to the pop-up shop can still experience the Snoop Dogg and Jack in the Box partnership by purchasing Snoop’s Munchie Meal, which is available at Jack in the Box restaurants nationwide.

The meal, available until Aug. 6, includes various popular sweet and savory food items from the fast-food company. The meal will cost $14 and includes:

• Spicy Sauced and Loaded Chicken Sandwich

• Classic Taco

• Medium Curly Fries

• Baked Brownie

• Sprite

Inglewood will not demolish Vons for transit connector to sports venues

Inglewood no longer plans to demolish a Vons supermarket to make way for the Inglewood Transit Connector, an estimated $1.85 billion automated rail system that will connect the Metro K line with the city’s sports and entertainment district.

The city will now build a maintenance and storage facility, originally slated for the Vons property, at the transit project’s Market Street station and leave untouched the Vons, its gas station and attached retail spaces, including a Planet Fitness, officials said.

“It’s better for the project, it’s better for the community at large,” said Lisa Trifiletti, the principal of Trifiletti Consulting, the firm tasked with guiding the project. “130 employees will not have to worry about the disruption.”

Inglewood drew backlash from residents when it announced it would displace 44 businesses and 454 employees to obtain the properties necessary for the automated transit system, which would have stations at Market Street and Florence Avenue, at Manchester Boulevard and Prairie Avenue, and at Prairie and Hardy Street. The city originally worked with Vons to develop a proposal to share the property, though the Vons would have been demolished and rebuilt on a smaller footprint.

In response to the community concerns, Trifilletti said the city went back to the three development teams expected to bid on the project and asked each if their proposals could shift to integrate the maintenance facility at the Market Street station instead. The three teams have each proposed using different technologies for the project and needed to fit the maintenance facility within specific parameters established by prior environmental reviews, she said.

The three proposed technologies are a monorail system developed by BYD, a rubber-tire people mover developed by Bombardier and a cable pull system by Dopplemeyer. Whatever system is selected would connect the Metro K Line to the Kia Forum, SoFi Stadium and Intuit Dome, the home of the Clippers beginning in 2024.

“We were able to engage them in one-on-one meetings to make sure their technology could achieve this idea without any new impacts at all,” Trifiletti said. The change will actually reduce the overall cost of the project as the city will no longer need to acquire the land, she said.

The City Council was set to host a public hearing for its plan to assist displaced businesses at its April 4 meeting, but the hearing was postponed until April 11 to give staff more time to update the plan with the latest information, according to Trifiletti.

With the Vons removed from the equation, the city still needs to displace 41 businesses that employ approximately 324 people to build the transit system.

Most are small businesses operating in two shopping centers located at Market Street and Florence Avenue and at Hardy Street and Prairie Avenue. Some owners have expressed concerns and anxiety about the city’s relocation plan, which includes reimbursements for moving expenses.

Though the city has said keeping the businesses in Inglewood is a priority, the relocation plan states there is no guarantee that suitable locations will be available.

“Our goal is not to have any business shut its doors, our goal is to have them relocated within the city,” Trifiletti said.

The Inglewood Transit Connector was initially proposed in July 2018 with a price tag of $600 million. The project had grown to about $1 billion by April 2020 and has nearly doubled since then.

Trifiletti said the latest estimates of $1.75 billion to $1.85 billion reflect the project’s current design and engineering needs, as well as cost increases in the real estate and construction markets. The price is likely to continue to evolve until the project receives formal bids from contractors, she said.

Inglewood has secured about $765 million of the funds necessary so far and is in the process of pursuing another $1 billion in federal and state grants. Some of the existing funding is contingent on the project being selected for the Federal Transit Administration’s Capital Investment Grant.

Trifiletti said the city should know whether it has all of the funding in place by this summer.

“We keep advancing, we’re advancing at record pace,” Trifiletti said.

The city is the process of updating its submittal to the FTA to include additional funds received from the state and the new designs for the maintenance facility. The hope is the project will be added to the presidential budget later this year, begin construction in 2024 and come online in 2028 in time for the Olympics, Trifiletti said.

“This is not for the Olympics, it is for every day, it is for the future, but we would like to be built and operational by the Olympics,” she said.
