CHANDLER, AZ (AZFamily)— Former Major League Baseball player JJ Hardy is building a miniature baseball field on his property, and some neighbors aren’t happy about it.

Pam Lang lives across the street from Hardy’s house. “Everybody has a right to enjoy their own yard, but this is something that is beyond what is reasonable to expect your neighbors to tolerate,” said Lang.

The Chandler mom reached out to Arizona’s Family to explain what was going on behind her house.

She said Hardy is building a field of dreams in his backyard for his family and friends.

Lang insists she had no idea the baseball field was being built until construction started a couple of months ago when she noticed a dozen 20-foot poles going up.

Looking at a big fence and lights every night is not something Lang wants to be subjected to.

“I didn’t sign up to live next to a baseball field,” said Lang. “It’s like a commercial, like living next to Top Golf, you know.”

Drone footage of the property near Gilbert and Riggs Road shows that a tennis court and putting green are already on site.

Arizona’s Family has learned the former ballplayer’s home is on a county island, while Lang’s house is in the city of Chandler.

“There’s an inherent unfairness to this, an injustice because he can do whatever he wants because it’s a county island, and I can’t,” said Lang. “I don’t have a recourse because I am bound by all these rules in this HOA.”

Lang has filed a complaint with Maricopa County and learned that her neighbor, who used to play for the Milwaukee Brewers and Baltimore Orioles, has yet to receive the necessary permits to build his ballpark.

There are still height and distance requirements that need to be met, even on a county island.

Arizona’s Family reached out to the former major leaguer to discuss the field and neighbors’ concerns, but a family member said they have no comment.

“It’s very disappointing and frustrating that all I can an do is file a complaint and hope that somebody in the county feels like listening to me,” said Lang.

Maricopa County officials said that Hardy has until April 22 to get the proper permits to finish his Field of Dreams.

If not, some of the current construction may need to come down, officials said.

PHOENIX — A Chandler teen who started a nonprofit nearly two years after her own mental health struggles is continuing her mission to help youth suffering from the same problems.

Riana Alexander was a junior at Chandler High School in 2022 when she had a mental health crisis. Her days at that time weren’t fun — she stopped spending time with friends and family and instead was alone, typically sleeping. At one point, she had to go to online school so she could get treatment.

Alexander had a good support system in her mother, but she started Arizona Students for Mental Health later in 2022 to help younger people who were going through the same issues she was, especially those without the same resources.

“The reason that I’m so passionate about mental health is because a lot of teens aren’t able to come out from these struggles well,” Alexander told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Outspoken with Bruce and Gaydos on Thursday.

Identifying teen mental health problems

Alexander said that when she was having her issues, she initially struggled to differentiate between normal teen problems and deeper mental health symptoms.

RELATED STORIES

Her nonprofit staff — Alexander has nearly 10 people, all high schoolers, helping — push out resources to the community on the warning signs of mental health problems. Part of the outreach involves informing the community on how to work with someone who is suspected of having issues.

Alexander’s mom was the one who helped her realize her behavior wasn’t normal.

“I think a lot of times, there’s really smart, really capable students that just fall through the cracks because their parents didn’t notice or their teachers didn’t notice and there’s just so much going on in so many people’s lives that sometimes, it’s really hard to see if your teen is struggling,” Alexander said.

Erasing the mental health stigma

The other part of Alexander’s nonprofit’s mission is to remove the stigma associated with mental health.

Her staff is purposely made up of high schoolers in order to amplify younger voices on an issue that is affecting them.

Arizona Students for Mental Health also works with the Chandler Unified School District and some Arizona politicians on how to tackle the issues.

Even so, Alexander said the work has to start at home.

“There’s not a job or a grade or any situation that’s going to be more important than you and prioritizing your health,” Alexander said. “So, if the steps to do that is talking to your parents about what’s going on, then you should do that and just be open and honest.”

The new location will also feature the concept’s daily happy hour with specials on classico margaritas, Mexican draft beer, sangria, cocktails and $3 tacos including al pastor, chicken tinga and the ‘Best F-ing Queso Birria.’

“Our Chandler location will be the same fun, energetic, delicious Mexicano our guests know and love,” says Joey Maggiore, chef and co-founder of The Maggiore Group and Chef Joey Concepts. “We are thrilled to be bringing our second location, and the party, to the Easy Valley this fall.”

Designed by Chef Joey’s wife Cristina Maggiore, the Chandler location will keep its Mexico City roots and fiesta ambience with vibrant colors, authentic imported furniture, indoor and outdoor seating and a custom DJ booth for daily entertainment. Guests can expect the same energetic scene with rotating DJs spinning Latin music seven days a week, fire dancers, and special appearances by local Mariachi bands.
