Dominium, a leading affordable housing owner, developer and manager announced today that it has closed a deal to develop two new affordable housing communities in Goodyear, Arizona.
LEARN MORE: 5 ways watching land use and zoning shows us where we’ll be in 2 years
Dominium will use the approximately 28-acre site located at 16985 W. Van Buren Street in Goodyear to construct 657 new affordable apartment homes for low-income families and seniors. Once constructed, Estrella Springs and Suncrest Vista at Canyon Trails will provide a combined total of 396 family and 261 age-restricted high-quality apartment homes, which combined marks the largest affordable multifamily new construction development within the state of Arizona. In cooperation with members of the local Goodyear Community, Dominium has incorporated numerous features that will benefit the community for many years to come, including landscaping improvements to drastically reduce water usage, artistic features designed by local high school students, and a flex space within the community clubhouse available for use by the local elementary school. The project will be constructed by WD construction.
Construction of Estrella Springs and Suncrest Vista at Canyon Trail will be supported by the Section 42 Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program (LIHTC) and include the use of private activity bonds. Nationwide, LIHTC is the largest source of support for the construction and maintenance of affordable housing communities. In exchange for tax credits, affordable housing developers and operators agree to maintain rents controlled by the Area Median Income (AMI). Construction of LIHTC properties has a positive effect on the local housing market through the simple fact of increasing the supply of affordable housing.
As Arizona’s housing crisis looms, Dominium and its partners are investing over $1 billion in the state to develop affordable housing for essential workers and Arizona’s seniors. Dominium has already opened Solstice of Mesa, providing 237 affordable homes for seniors, adding to its existing portfolio of Copper Cove Apartments in Tolleson and Vista Ridge Apartments in South Phoenix. Additionally, Dominium currently has over 1,500 affordable homes under construction across the Valley, including this new community in Goodyear, with an additional 1,500 units proposed in the next few years.
Nationally, Dominium manages more than 38,000 apartments in roughly half the states across the country. Dominium has a reputation of developing high-quality properties that they own and manage for the long-term. Dominium is collaborating with the Arizona Department of Housing, the Arizona Industrial Development Authority, the Arizona Housing Coalition and a number of other investor partners to increase the number of affordable housing units in the state.
Dominium would like to thank its development partners U.S. Bank, Freddie Mac, JLL Real Estate Capital, Deutsche Bank, Bremer Bank, and Colliers Securities whose assistance made this project possible. Additional partners include the City of Goodyear, Maricopa County. Winthrop & Weinstine, Burch & Cracchiolo, Todd & Associates, Hunter Engineering, Commercial Partners Title, Kutak Rock, and US Bank as fiscal Agent. Dominium would like to thank all these partners for their assistance on this project, continued commitment to providing high quality affordable housing, and ongoing partnership with Dominium.

Vantage Data Centers, a leading global provider of hyperscale data center campuses, and general contractor McCarthy Building Companies recently completed the topping out milestone for Phase II at Vantage Data Centers’ major new data center project in Goodyear, hosting a celebratory ceremony today with Goodyear Mayor Joe Pizzillo in attendance.
LEARN MORE: Here’s why data center demand continues to outpace supply in Metro Phoenix
The design-build team is currently constructing the expansion of phase II of the project, which when fully developed will represent a mega-scale campus expansion offering hyperscalers and large cloud providers 176MW of IT capacity across three facilities totaling more than 1 million square feet. Vantage is investing more than $1.5 billion into the development, which is expected to create approximately 3,000 construction and technology jobs.
Phase II of the project is scheduled to be operational in the spring of 2024.
“Vantage is excited to celebrate this construction milestone alongside Mayor Pizzillo, the City of Goodyear, Arizona Public Service Company, McCarthy and other special guests,” said Simon Casey, vice president of construction at Vantage Data Centers. “We appreciate the City of Goodyear welcoming us into their community, as well as the investments that the state of Arizona is making into sustainable digital infrastructure. We look forward to our continued collaboration and partnership.”
"Phase II of the Vantage Data Centers' Arizona campus is an exciting expansion within the Bullard Tech Corridor," stated Mayor Pizzillo. "The presence of data centers in our city serves as a catalyst for economic growth, bringing significant investments and valuable job opportunities. We highly value our partnership with Vantage and appreciate their commitment to both sustainability and the innovative architectural design of the campus within our community."
“We are proud of the progress made to date on Vantage Data Centers’ project by our Mission Critical team and the design-build collaborative partnership,” said Ryan Ferguson, vice president and project executive with the Mission Critical team at McCarthy Building Companies, the general contractor for Phase II of the project. “Thanks to all stakeholders, this project is a leader in sustainable development and a cornerstone of the Bullard Tech Corridor in the West Valley that will serve as a key economic driver for the City of Goodyear.”
Many of the Goodyear campus’ features are based on Vantage’s standardized campus blueprint, emphasizing sustainable construction practices. The campus is designed to use virtually no water for cooling, instead employing a closed-loop chilled water system that allows for reduced energy use based on outside ambient temperature. The campus is on track to achieve Green Globe certification.
In spring 2023, the Vantage Data Centers expansion received a VPP STAR designation, which is the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) highest program of safety recognition across all federal OSHA and state OSHA offices. It recognizes employers and workers in private and federal workplaces who have exemplified effective safety and health management systems that achieve injury and illness rates more than 50% below the national average.
Key construction design and trade partners on the phase II expansion include Corgan Architects, Rosendin Electric, Southland Industries and Amfab Steel.

GOODYEAR, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) — The Goodyear Fire Department says an unknown substance found at the Perryville prison complex in Goodyear has been determined to be non-hazardous. Fire officials provided the update shortly before noon, over five hours after the incident that sent over a dozen people to the hospital.
At around 6:30 a.m., firefighters and hazardous materials crews were called out to the San Carlos unit at the prison, located on Citrus Road, north of McDowell Road, after three employees were taken to the hospital after coming in contact with a substance that made them feel nauseous. Soon after, other correctional officers and two inmates reported similar symptoms. The Arizona Department of Corrections Rehabilitation & Reentry (ADCRR) says 12 staff members and 2 inmates were taken to a hospital “out of an abundance of caution.”
Earlier in the day, ADCRR said that a white powder substance had been found on a transport vehicle and had been handed over to a correctional officer, who began feeling dizzy and light-headed. Prison officials added that those affected were inside an administrative building that does not house inmates. Fire officials said that once the area was secure, hazmat teams went into the prison to find the source of the substance and isolated the area. Crews took a sample while on scene, which was sent to a state lab and deemed non-hazardous. It’s unclear if crews have specifically identified the substance.
ADCRR says all staff members and inmates have since been released from the hospital and that operations are resuming as normal.
Crews from Phoenix, Buckeye and Glendale also responded.
